4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Corker444 (10) - California, USA - FEB 2, 2012
Poured into Tulip Glass from both 12oz and 22oz. Dark color, real dark a lot of extraction of the Smoked and Chocolate Malts. Rich and clean with a decent amount of Smoke Flavor. It is not over the top. Real clean finish with use of some hops according to website. I liked this ale. It is a real good finish to the day.

Bomber pours dark brown with copper hues and light looking mocha head. The modest aroma has a bit of dark roasted maltiness, some rauch smoked malts and a touch of bacon. The taste has dark roasted maltiness and a bit of spicy black licorice rolling into modest levels of smoky sort of peatiness and smooth dry cooked bacon. Into the finish the spicy anise like note or black licorice sort of takes front stage here as the dark roasted malts and rauch float around in the background.

22oz bottle at the May 2011 DC tasting. Thick brown-black. Steady beige head. Burnt smoky aroma. Charred coffee. Somewhat watery, but lots of burnt malt flavor, burnt bacon tones. Very nice, lots of smoky depth. A hint of warmth. Well done.

Bottle; not expecting much, but like the style. Bottle poured a dark brown with a large light brown head. Aroma was quite nice; caramel, cocoa, and roasted malt. A bit of must and chalk. Flavor was not quite as good, but it was solid. A good smoky tone too it, but not as vibrant or complex as some other offerings of the style. Some good notes and drinkable, make this a success.

Got a four pack of this on Lawrence in Chicago. Reminded more of a chocolate stout rather than a smoked porter. Would like to have had more smoked flavors throughout, but it had what it says: mocha and coffee. Very smooth mouthfeel and a nice dark look. Smelled sweet. A bit high in price at $17, but worth it. Probably wouldn’t buy again at that price.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 kramer (3878) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 15, 2012
22 oz bottle. Pours a clear mahogany brown body under a small fizzy beige head that retained as a thin film. The nose is quite nice and pretty smoky, much better than I was expecting actually. Nice campfire like quality to the smoke with some chocolaty and lightly roasted malts. The flavor is a little less aggressive on the smoke than the aroma, but still the dominant character. Again, very campfire like and natural tasting smokiness. Chocolate malt backs up the rauch and keeps the sweetness in check. Some lingering burnt notes. Mouthfeel is maybe a touch thin for my taste, but it’s not watery by a long shot. Fizzy moderate carbonation. Not a bad Smoked Porter, not among the best like Alaskan’s, but I didn’t have a problem finishing a bottle.

Smoke aroma, with light coffee notes. Clear garnet brown, thin tan head, minimal lacing. Substantially smoky, but not to rauchbier levels. Tree bark and soil also present. Campfire smoke and twigs finish. Somewhat astringent, filmy mouthfeel. It must be me, but I’m finding I don’t like smoked porters very much.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 3fourths (6949) - Straßgiech, Bavaria, GERMANY - JAN 11, 2012
multiple bottles. begins as a fairly benign semi-sweet caramel / toffee / cola-flavored malt showcase with mild touches of charred wood and liquid smoke, but as it warms the yeast begins to show it’s effect: meaty, wood-soaked grape juice and paint. medium-light body; chewy and goopy, low acid, medium-low bitterness; coating malt syrup finish.
