Astoria South Jetty IPA

This was my first beer at the Wet Dog Café and it was a true pleasure. I’ll leave the full ambiance of the Wet Dog to my beerfly review, but the total atmosphere of an outdoor table on the banks of the Columbia River with trolley cars rolling past and a man inside playing ragtime piano all contributed to making a great beer taste just that much better. South Jetty IPA is a clouded rusty orange with a compact head that gently recedes. It is dominated by a hemp-like aroma and taste. If you like the flavor of cannabis, you’ll love this beer. It has a very graceful mouthfeel and leaves a broad rim of lace. And the finish is like fine woodwork – rich in detail and craftsmanship. The aftertaste arrives with a packed suitcase informing you it intends to stay awhile. Let it.

Had on tap at Astoria pub. Golden/orangey color, minimal head and lacing. Definitely dominated by hops, could use a little more malt balance. Pleasant, crisp, bitter flavor overall and a decent IPA.

Slightly murky orange. An earthy and APA-ish bitterness, metallic at times, dusty, not very pleasent. The aroma contains some scotch, buts and butter... so you can see... not very good... could be improved dramatically.

Astoria (Wet Dog Cafe) on tap: Light gold and hazy with a frothy, milk-white head. Crisp, light and refreshing. Very aromatic, flowery and spicy. Some bitterness grew in the finish. Light fruity nuances (lemon mostly). Not very complex, and not necessarily how I like my IPAs, but it was clean and refreshing.

rated 4/21/03 at Wet Dog Cafe , Astoria. Hazy golden color, white head with nice retention. Very hoppy, with a big hop punch, right to the bitter finish. Very much a NW style IPA.
