On tap @ Astoria Brewing Co. Deep amber with a small off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee and light pine. Flavor is all malt, sweet and caramel with some dark fruit. Medium body with mild carbonation and a syrupy mouth feel. Not bad but a bit on the sweet side for my palate.

Tap at the brewpub. Light copper pour. Toffee and cherry like aroma. Thick malty body with a lingering hop bitterness in the taste. Good stuff.

DuffMan (4418) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - APR 14, 2010
On tap at the brewpub. Clear copper amber, average white head. Toasty malts with hints of chocolate in the aroma, some sponge toffee in the flavour. Medium sweetness and medium bitterness. Not very memorable really.

Dogbrick (4824) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - FEB 12, 2010
Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a hazy reddish-amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes quickly. Stringy lacing. Malty aroma with some booze coming through. Medium, somewhat syrupy body with flavors of roasted malt, ripe fruit and hops. Alcohol in the background as well. The finish is rich and fruity with a lingering malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

SledgeJr (3577) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - FEB 4, 2010
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a hazy dark amber with a thin white head. Apple aroma. Has a medium thick sweet malty backbone but unfortunately there is a slight diacetyl trace. The unbalanced drying hop finish just does not work for me in this one. I felt this was perhaps the worst beer served here, but it was still drinkable.

Beardface (1497) - Eugene, Oregon, USA - DEC 8, 2009
Sampler tray at brewpub. Poured out a very deep red color with a big off white head. Aroma was roast malt, caramel, definite pine hoppiness and mild alcohol. Flavor was much more boozy than the smell, with definite roasted malt and pine hops trying to break free but ultimately failing. This was close to being a delicious brew, but the booziness needs to be toned down just a smidge.

Enjoyed three of these at the Wet Dog Cafe in Astoria (Wet Dog is an offshoot of the brewery; they share the building). The head was smallish and off-white, above a dark body. The low-key aroma was mostly malt, with nothing to suggest the high ABV. Taste was just good as was the mouthfeel, with a pleasant finish.

Definitely a strong ale. Tasts like alcohol and has a kick. A little bit of hop and malt mix flavors.
