Pours a murky, orangish brown. Thin tan head, quickly dissipates. Looks almost flat but the mouth reveals some carbonation. Smells of honey and sweet mead. Caramel. Nutty, vanilla. Fruity, ripe plum. Vinuous.
Tastes of rich caramel malt. Vanilla and oak. Honey. Light alcohol flavor. Sweet. Earthy and bready. Spiced apple way back. Very barleywine-ish but with a bit of mead flavor mixed in. Mouth is velvet smooth. Elegantly masks the alcohol. A sipper but a real smooth one. Must get more to age... CapFlu (3494), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Pours a beautiful copper colour with a thin, white, quick-dissipating head. Stong flower, perfume aroma with a slight undertone of sulpher. The flavour is rather caramel and honey and very pleasant though I think the palate lacks any lasting finish. I found some of my colleagues reviews seem to forget that they are rating what we’ve listed as a mead. This is pretty good as its got a lot of flavours and dimension. | 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Sep 23, 2005 Maybe a honey ale is supposed to be cloyingly sweet, with an unpeasant mouth feel. Maybe a honey ale is supposed to lie there dead in the glass with no head. Maybe the flavor is supposed to be simple and unbalanced, with sweetness, bitternesss, and a tiny bit of malt but nothing to integrate them and tie them together. I have not had enough honey ales to know. But I surely did not care for this one. I had a glass, half a large bottle. I’ll pour the rest of the bottle down the sink. tbookman (618), Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA

Flavor is cloying sweet with a very astringent mouthfeel from the alcohol. Other flavors of bread, and bit of hoppy bitterness. Average. Cletus (5060), Connecticut, USA

Sweet honey goodness was in there, but so was a lot of complexity, especially compared to other honey beers I can think of. Nice dark golden color with hints of malty sweetness in the aroma. The alcohol was barely noticable in the flavor, butthe overall flavor wasn’t as strong as I would expect for a barely winish ale, as that was what they caled it at the brewery. Anyway, a good drink. fly (1334), austin, Tejas, USA

Honey was present as would be expected, but found precious little else. Was hoping for I know not what - perhaps some exquisite dry quality imparted by the honey or a rare honey from the blosom of a flower known only to five people on the planet. Well, that didn’t happen.
