4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Pigfoot (2268) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - SEP 20, 2004
Appearance: deep and murky, rhurbarb-hued, with a brief, pinkish head, most unusual.
Aroma is heady, complex, cherries, post wine, very barleywine-ish, powerful stuff.
Full-on flavor from the start, rich and fruity, lightly hoppy, dominant malt, very vinous...smooth on tongue, surprisingly, though the booze makes it’s presence felt soon enough. Uncompromising, and brimming with character.
Full body, long, rich, fruity finish.
Enjoyed in the company of friends, most impressive..big thanks to bennybrew, heck of a good one, here!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Panzuriel (1190) - Westerville, Ohio, USA - AUG 16, 2004
Bottled 2001. Beer is a somewhat thick amber color with a thin head. Strong sweet aroma. Malty honey aroma with a good satiny mouthfeel. Somewhat strong, but a good sipping ale.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beermatrix (1497) - Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA - JUN 3, 2004
Bottled Nov. 2001 - Jello hazed copper color, a few soapy bubbles appear from the pour and thats about it. No lace. Sweet inviting nose of soft caramel mixed with a strong bearing of honey and the alcohol vapors are reminiscent of white wine. Some wiffs are stronger then others. Flavors intermingle between honey and caramel, each sip seems to bring out a little more of one or the other. Quite sweet overall, malty mostly, smooth; honey on top, good medium thickness for its body. Pretty strong wine-like alcoholic vapors seize up through each sip and slightly burns with a long lingering throaty grab, much like any good barleywine. I think perhaps thats my favorite part of this concoction. A definate sipper here. Enjoyable enough. If you’ve had any meads, and like em, this will be right up your alley. Interesting mix but a little muted for my tastes.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Gusler (2653) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - DEC 23, 2003
As this most unusual of Ales sets in my glass, it presents a bemused copper color with a smallish head and the lace a nice fine sheet around the glass also the color a light tan. Nose is a bit sweet from the honey, hints of fusel alcohol, malt a plenty, a tad vinous, a gallimaufry of aromas to fascinate the olfactory senses, start is sweet, rich in malt and the top middling in its feel. Finish is idoneous in its acidity with a modicum of hops, the alcohol moliminous. A true belly warmer this hybrid whether it be “Mead” or “Strong Old Ale”, I care not, I care that a good friend doth send it to me to be enjoyed with “Gusto”, and this task has been accomplished.
2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 McWhite (107) - Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 18, 2003
Tasted like a mix between brandy and wine. Also some malts in there too. Definitely not my style. The only other beer I've had that was similar to this was the Victory old horizontal, which I don't believe I've entered a rating for...yet.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 muzzlehatch (4424) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - JAN 20, 2003
22oz bottle, November 2000 vintage. Hazy bloodstain color, tiny ring of foam around the inside of the glass. Nose alcoholic, butterscotchy, slightly honied. Flavor rather harsh and heavy at the beginning, plummy, brandylike. A bit too strong on the alcohol, and a bit too big upfront, but I loved the toffee undertones near the back end. Thick, but not sticky, mouthfeel, with virtually no carbonation. I like it quite a bit, but this is definitely a beer for sweet sherry or port drinkers.
PS HOPHEADS, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! THE MALTS ARE COMING, THE MALTS ARE COMING!
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 omhper (17561) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - OCT 18, 2002
Bottled. Gift from VENOM. THANKS!
Very dark red. Lingering balsamic honey aroma. Very sweet, very complex and vinuous. Like a fine natural sweet wine. Lovely flvaour, but thick mouthfeel, and I’m glad I’ve got plenty of friends to share this big bottle with, as a full bottle is too much.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 15, 2002
Sake mouthfeel with mead flavors…Sweet caramel wine…Waking up from a strange daydream…
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 amx1970390 (480) - Southampton, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 4, 2002
No head, none, zero. Root beer in color. Smells of candied sugar, honey and alcohol. The flavor is quite sweet but the alcohol cuts right through that. Yes this is really different and it really good. If you are ever in Bar Harbor, you need to buy at leat 1 bottle of this.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 TAR (2349) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - JUL 2, 2002
Aged since Nov. 2000: Aroma includes a very rich honey, rye, candied malt, strawberries, brandy, and abundant, nose-burning alcohol. Soft and mellow mouthfeel. Deep copper liquid with no sign of foam. Notes of plums and honey in the forefront. Peachy notes emerge in the finish. Chocolate/butterscotch hints, as it nears room temp. Rubbery/alcoholic burps. Extremely sharp alcohol with spicy undertones, yet not overly warm, plows right through any flavors that would be left in its path. Strangely, the richness, blended with a lager temp., made this much more tolerable, and dare I say, more enjoyable. The pungeancy has absolutely nowhere to hide. So, needless to say, I threw it right back in the fridge until it was time for a refill. I would shoot myself in the foot to acquire one more of this interesting brew. Some age could turn this into a gem of a beer. ’Spirit’ fans, watch out! Thanks, beer pal Venom!
