shintriad (687), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 25, 2008 I cannot believe how many beers are called "Coal Porter." In any case, this one pours a fine black with a medium, fairly dissipating but lacy cream head. Some notes of soy, coffee and licorice in aroma and flavour, although the taste is a bit thin -- somewhat burnt and woody, tiny bit of sourness, but mostly clean, some light hops. Pretty good, not exceptional.
stison42 (311), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Aug 26, 2008 Black with little to no head. Smells of dark malt. Light and clean with a decent cocoa taste. dangelicom1 (17), Shelton, Connecticut, USA Aug 25, 2008 this is a very good porter. I thought it was one of Atlantic Brewings best offerings. it is as black as night but has a great taste. it is a meal in a glass. you can really taste the hints of the chocolate malts. it has a very rich flavor and a small hop finish
flatmatt (79), Northville, Michigan, USA Aug 22, 2008 12 oz bottle. Very dark brown with a light tan head. Screwed up opening the bottle (darn unexpected screw-tops), so I have no idea what size the head would be otherwise. Anyhow, rich chocolate aroma with some roasted coffee notes. Flavor is chocolate, some dark fruit, roasted coffee. A little alcohol shows through. Not too bad. kkearn (652), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 18, 2008 12oz bottle, purchased at the brewery. Poured deep brown with ruby highlights, capped with a moderate-sized tan head. Appealing aroma of espresso, mocha, chocolate malt, and vanilla. The body is a little thinner than I expected. Flavor begins with with chocolate malt, with espresso, charcoal, and vanilla flavors gradually building. Finish is fairly bitter, with notes of ash. Overall, this is a decent porter; it displays some flavor while remaining approachable. Bockyhorsey (1973), Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 11, 2008 12oz bottle. Good chcocolate and coffee aromas. Black body with tan head and some decent lacing. Thick body with rich chcolate flavoe. Leaves the palate little dry with some coffee notes.
