COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Brown colored body with a bubbly and light brown/grey head. Aroma is a combination of cocoa, coffee, smoke and a hint of chicory. Chocolate is predominant in taste but foral hops and smoke accents drive through your mouth. The oily texture is a joy for your tongue. Great beer.

Not as bitter as a typical porter, but it is dark as any porter and tastes like a ’typical’ porter,

Pours basically black with a decent sized khaki head that settles to a thick fine-bubbled ring and film and leaves some walls and spots of lace. Nose involves some mild dark chocolate notes, whiffs of woody and floral hops, cream and sugar. Fairly sweet, somewhat bitter. Lighter bodied, active, a bit oily and slick, finishing somewhat dry with woody, earthy hops.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from One Stop Market. Aroma is vanilla, roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, caramel, but slight methane/port-o-potty smell when returning the nose to the glass. Appearance is dark brown with finger width light brown head with poor retention and trace lacing. Taste is more bitter coffee and cigarette ash than sweet dark fruits and caramel. Palate is medium bodied with thin texture, average carbonation and bitter ash finish. Overall, something slightly off in the aroma and a bit more ash flavor than I’d care for. Lives up to its name.

Bottle from Perfect Pour. Dark brown cola body with thin tan lasting head. Nose is chocolate, malts, caramel, roasty. Taste is similar of malts and dark chocolate. Nice hoppy and vanilla flavors. Very subdued. Nice beer.

Upon attempting to pour this beer, there was no way to do so without it foaming up like a bomb had gone off. Thinking i had shaken them perhaps on the ride home from the store I tried a 2nd one the next day, same problem. The beer has a metallic smell and taste, I think I got a coffee flavored bottle of cheap malt liquor here. Major ripoff for such a foul taste and bad experience. How did this brewery let this pass? Something way wrong here.

A nice mellow porter that has substance but lacks the overall enthusiasm that makes this beef exceptional. Toasty nutty malt with a clean head and easy tasting . A session beer with restrictions. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In Coal Porter, there is nothing wildly thrilling happening, just a damned solid Porter. Matching perfectly are the nose and flavour, although simple. Bold notes of strong, black coffee pierce through the more subdued chocolate intimations. The body feels somewhat thin but still with a nice slickness, slightly coating the tongue with the malt’s roasty bitterness. Leaving no lacing behind or even a head to speak of, this is an enjoyable if forgettable example.

Roasted malt aroma. Coal black body with a tan half inch head that stays quite some time. Roasted malt taste. Has a dry and smooth character.

Bottle to pint glass at 51 Lincoln, Newton, MA. Aroma is toasted barley, oatmeal,. Taste is chalky, but Smokey sweet. Coffee, oatmeal, touch of salt. Appearance is thick black, off white head is larger than most. Lively carbonation. Almost a stout. Great beer.
