DocLock (4085), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 2, 2006 22 oz bottle from Santa. Thanks! Wow, very few people have had this one. Pours deep blackish, with a gorgeous ruby hue through direct light. The head is small and tan. The aroma is big roasty malt, some chocoff, figgy fruit, nuts, and molasses. The taste is roasty malty, I dare say a tad rauchy, with some dark chocolate hints and some almond, molasses, and mid-palate hops. The rauch slowly creeps up in intensity as it warms, and the palate on this one is full bodied and complex. This is the perfect beer to sip by a fireplace. Bravo! Do yourself a favor and get ya some of this, or trade with someone who can! ruggedman (416), Portland, Maine, USA Sep 14, 2006 Finally my last Atlantic brew from their collection. I now have the run the full gamut of their beers. This is a wonderful way to finish too! Aroma is floral, there’s the hop floral, and then heather flowery smells. Supposedly this beer is brewed with heather, so I guess that makes sense. The body is really smooth, nice and pleasant on the palate, taste is also very flowery. It’s dry and malty also, as you would expect a scottish to be and a little sweet (from the malt). Very well made beer from one of my favorite brewers in this state. These guys always put together pretty solid beers, with the limited supply of this one it’s really a shame because this is probably their best (as far as general appeal to the beer community goes). Get it if you see it! BigBen2120 (554), Gardiner(52 miles from Allagash), Maine, USA Aug 15, 2008 22oz bomber from The Lighthouse in Manchester. Pours a nearly opaque dark brown/black body with ruby-red highlights and a thin film of light tan head. Smells roasty, slightly peaty, with chocolate notes. Tastes sweet and malty, with roast, caramel, chocolate, and hints of peatiness. Medium to full in body with moderate carbonation. A good combination and balance of flavors, though it reminds me of some mid-point between a Scottish and Scotch ale. A solid and flavorful beer. BBB63 (3795), La Porte, Indiana, USA Apr 21, 2008 Bomber bottle and served in my La Chouffe glass: Pours a brown hue with some reddish highlights topped by a fading beige head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of caramel and rye bread, prune, star anise, smoked wood, heather, herbal and grassy hops, and some walnut esters. The taste is moderately malty sweet with a fruity twang, very balanced and drinkable for the style. Gets a bit herbal and woody towards the finish, I swear there is rye in this beer. The mouth feel is medium-bodied with a lively dance upon the palate before heading towards a dry finish.
Really a fine brew and a tad underrated IMO. Mikey Likey!!! (If this beer was brewed by Stone or Bells, it would be a 3.8 or better average beer, know that)
