Bottle. Pours very dark brown with almost no head and no lacing. Smells of faint woody smoke and earthy basement aromas nicely reminiscent of an old summer house on Long Island. It has a hint of sweetness, average carbonation, medium body and a slightly smoky finish. A pretty good brew.

A - Pours a dark mahogany brown. Thick tan head that leaves rings of lacing. S - Smokey malt with hints of perfume and vanilla. Alcohol vapors come through as it warms. T - Roasted malt that is both earthy and smokey. Black walnuts, muted wild flowers, and sweet oak. Finishes dry. This is mellow but complex at the same time. Creamy with low carbonation. One of the more drinkable Scottish ales I’ve had. Serving type: bottle 10-05-2010

From a bottle poured a dark brown color with a small amount of head. Bitter malty flavor with a lingering finish.

Backlog...2012...bottle from Joe M so this was probably @ Station? Pours brown/ruby with a medium tan head. Aroma is roasty with mild peatiness. Flavor has light caramel and roastiness with very nice smokiness. Mouthfeel is medium with a smoky roasty finish.

Bottle shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike! Currently the #1 Scottish Ale. The beer is dark chestnut hued, with an off white head that leaves random traces of lacing on the glass. The aroma brings some toasted malt, caramels, and roast. Good flavor, with some pleasant smokey notes. Roast and toffee make for a nice sipping beer. Simple and effective. The body is thinner than I was expecting, with moderate carbonation. Overall, a decent brew. I would have this again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-19-2011

Sweet aroma with a mild but robust sour malt aroma. Dark amber color with a small tan head. Mild sweet beginning with a moderate dark bitter finish. Palate is thick.

A nice roast, smoke, nut and caramel taste. A decent blend with a hint of hop. I liked it, but the blend of ingredients could have been netter.

This beer is one of those that you come across once in awhile where the individual rating points aren’t that special, but the overall beer is quite nice. The aroma is on the mild side with predominately the sweet roasted malt. Also some peat, toffee, dark fruit and alcohol. The beer pours a clear dark brown, almost opaque with good red highlights There is a medium creamy tan head that reduces to just a film eventually. This beer does look good in the glass. The beer has a thick creamy texture with a good amount of malt sweetness. There is a hint of smokiness and that peat earthiness. The finish is very smooth and mild with a nice alcohol warmth. This is a very smooth, mellow easy drinking beer on the slightly sweet side.

Good high-malted brew. The heather additions make this a smooth yet smokey ale without any type of bittering. Certainly a beer worth drinking, yet it’s overall syrupy mouthfeel and relatively uninteresting flavor profile keep this from being an out and out winner. Hides the alcohol well.

Picked this bottle up at State Line in Elkton, MD. Served in a SAVOR snifter. Pours a clear copper-brown color with an average off-white head and some sparse spotty lacing on the way down. The nose brings through a moderate amount of bready malt along with some light caramel and a bit of a nutty character. The flavor adds some light smoke, which works well in tandem with a bit of roast and toast. Mild character comes from the heather tips, which dry out the finish. Medium body and some fizzy carbonation. Good smoke element in the finish as well. Nice beer. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-13-2011
