Brewed at Atlas in collaboration with Begyle Brewing, we added smooth black wheat malt to a Trappist-style dark ale, resulting in a richly fruity, nutty beer with a dry, subtly roasty finish.

Draft at World of Beer Naperville. Pours a rich dark brownish color with a tan fluffy head. Aroma is fruity, with lots of belgian estery notes. Some chocolate, some caramely, mild nutty and roast notes. Some coffee, some slight woody bitterness as well. Bananas, mild candi sugar. Flavor is fruity, sweet, with apparent roast, umami, and wood notes. Nice, full bodied, and coating mouthfeel, somewhat fluffy. Finishes sweet.

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and dispensed to a snifter with initial, mahogany highlighting, but mainly a near opague, black/brown color, with very diminishing, brownish tan head foam, and light but fading spots & streaks of lacing. The aroma was dry, smoke, some roastiness, and dark fruit as prune. Medium bodied, moderately bitter, with moderate, tanniny astringency, and a spritzy effervescence that faded quickly enough to give off a thin and watery impression. A little boozy, and dry finishing. The nose and taste were promising, but the look and mouthfeel faltered a bit.

6oz draft at Jerry’s Wicker Park. Oh, this was a wonderful treat. One never knows what can come out of a Black Abbey Ale but I will always try them. Bottom line: this is a perfect melding of roasted malts and light esters from a Belgian yeast. Thankfully hops take a back seat. It tasted like a roast, cocoa banana. Esters were light but definitely a mild banana flavor. This was covered in a light malt roast and unsweetened cocoa to round it off. Low bitterness, black colored beer.

Draft at Jerry’s. Black with scant, whispy, brown head, no legs / Simple, odd nose of ashtray, coffee, alcohol / Light to medium body, smooth, fat and flat, sweet, some hop balance / Flavors of roast barley, tobacco, plum, banana, caramel / I did enjoy the interesting flavors, but really this beer needs a do over. Sort of a curious home-brewer project.

Tap flight at the brewpub. Black pour, still in the glass. Banana and charcoal aroma, but mostly banana. The flavor is banana, circus peanut candy, and roast. Sounds gross but it’s actually quite good. Reminiscent of a brûléed custard. Still in the glass and tasty.

Really funky and odd beer, but I kinda like it! Tartness, tangy, nuts, riep fruits, roast, spiciness.
