3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 RAYBOY01 (2003) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 19, 2006
Deep dark brown pour with a substantial and long-lasting off-white head. Flavors of roasted caramel malt, with touches of smoke and charcoal. A touch of sourness in the finish, subtle, but it’s there...and that distracted. The flavors are fairly robust which makes the thin watery texture all the more surprising. Not bad, but could stand a fuller body. Earlier Rating: 2/3/2005 Total Score: 3.4 Nice malting...roasted flavor pervades with a rather too spritzy mouthfeel (overcarbonated), but a nice blend of sweet malt with slight hoppy bite. Decent, if not remarkable. Certainly drinkable.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 beerbill (2850) - Laurel, New York, USA - JUN 8, 2006
12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep, nearly opaque, ruby red with a thick off-white head that lasted through the entire glass. For a dark beer, I thought the aromas were on the light side. Traces of malt and caramel were present. Flavor I thought was also a bit light for a beer advertising itself as a dark lager. In fact, if I hadn’t seen the beer or read the label in advance, I’d almost wonder if this was a light beer, that’s how minimal the flavors were. Malt, caramel, and unsweetened iced tea flavors were present but very subdued. Watery mouthfeel. Slight bitter hops finish.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SledgeJr (3579) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - JUN 7, 2006
In the bottle. This was a June 2006 Beer-of-the-month club selection. Thanks to p-man for the beer. Pours nearly black with an oyster white head. Chocolate aroma. The head is large and thick with great staying power. The flavor is smooth. It’s a slightly sweet beer, but has a good roasted taste. Finish is tingly on the tongue. The smoothness and richness of the palate is a real standout to this creamy beer.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 murawski (158) - USA - JUN 4, 2006
Bottle. Dark, opaque brown/black color, large beige head disappeared quickly. Nice toasted malts aroma with a hint of sweetness (fruit or chocolate). Palate was a bit fizzy for my taste, but the flavor was well balanced between the dark malts and some hints of sweetness (again, hints of fruit come out). Overall, pretty good Dunkel.

Bottle from the Beer Yard. Lovely deep brown (ruby through light) pour with 2-finger fluffy khaki head. Aroma of roasty toasty dark malts, some tart cherries and cabernet hints, plus some berries and cacao. The flavor is roasty malty, tart, with some krieky and dry red winey characteristics, along with some of the same lactobacillus found in the amber ale. Medium palate, with more caramel malt as it finishes, along with some hops. Earlier Rating: 8/4/2004 Total Score: 3.4 Thanks to JPDIPSO for this. Pours deep brown, with a creamy, off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, almonds. Tastes malty, with a caramel, nut, slight hoppy flavor at the finish.

Received from World Beer Direct Beer-of-the-Month club. Pours deep brown with healthy, long lasting beige head. Aroma is burnt buttery caramel. Taste is also somewhat buttery with a medium sweetness on the backside. Palate is smooth with a full body and light carbonation. Worth another pour.
