Very malty aroma and a dark brown with a large head. Very inviting. Worst part about this beer is that the after taste is shallow and disapates quickly. Nothing sticks out as amazing on this beer, but the nice malt flavor/aroma is definitely a plus, and the hopping is perfect for someone not looking for a hop bomb.

From a bottle, at The Lodge in Keego, MI. A pretty beer, dark but still transparent with a nice tan head. Aroma was of malti-goodness with some roastyness and toastyness...and then fireworks. This style often goes there for me, smelling like fireworks or burning leaves, niether of which appeal to me. The flavour was the same, a balance of things I really like, and things I really don’t, with the great roastyness, but clean and crisp unlike porters and stouts, but then there’s the fireworks smell, and a touch of sourness fighting against the pleasant sweetness. A little hop in the finish comes out. Lots of potential if the smokiness is better applies, or maybe I’m just not cut out for Dunkels...

Aroma of brown sugar, grassy hops and sickly sweet malts. The body is an maber hued brown and holds a bubbly diminishing tan head. Mostly malty, light toasted grains, some very subtle fruity notes. Very low bitterness. Drinkable, but fairly uninteresting.

Aroma was overtly sour, but also held a good whiff of brown sugary malt aromas. Body is a dark red-tinted brown and it holds a slowly diminishing two finger thick tan head. Fore is sweet, somewhat nutty and brown ale like, with rich malts that touch briefly on chocolate and caramel. Some mild dark fruits and raisin notes also show up briefly. There is a continuing tartness that echoes the sour aroma and seems off here, but it still has some positive qualities and tastes decent enough.
2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Cappadonna (110) - Delray Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 7, 2006
Pours coffee brown with a foamy tan head. I did not enjoy the sour aroma and couldn’t make much out of it. The flavor was sour and malty. Overall, not my favorite.

Atwater Dunkel. 12 oz. bottle from BOTMC. Drank 6/5/06. Deep, dark amber. Nice red hues when held to the light. 1cm. tan head. Nice layer of foam, a little lace. Not a strong aroma. Little bit of a spicy german yeast character. Little plum, raisin type of aroma. Little malty bready aroma. Decently balanced with a nice sweet and spicy finish. Sweeter than your avg. dunkel. Little bit of a fruity character. Palate is light to medium with lower than avg. carb. Overall - best of the BOTMC this month (may) for me. This one’s got some good interesting flavors and goes down easy. Nice interpretation of the style.

This was a beer of the month club beer. The nose is of slight roasty malt with a butter background. Flavor has chocolate, butter, and fruit with smooth and crisp finish. I has a slight creamy texture to it as well. Okay beer. At least it is clean.

I was hoping for more with this beer, but perhaps my bottle was a little old or exposed for too long. The aroma was somewhat nutty but the taste has a sour flavor to it which I did not like. Give it a try for yourself and perhaps you will like it.
