Pours dark molases with a head that almost immediately disappears. Aroma is day old coffee grounds in that depressing tinted filter kind of way. The flavor starts out sweet with strong flavors of Vanilla and coffee but finishes bitter with the nose winning over and coffee grounds filling dancing on the tongue with the strong carbonation. Would enjoy more balance of vanilla and coffee with a stronger coffee rather than ground flavor. Overall average.

Pours dark with a quickly dissipating head. Strong chocolate smell. First taste is all coffee, and doesn’t waver much. I didn’t really get vanilla. It felt kind of "thin" for a porter. But it was smooth, with no bitterness. Better than I expected.

My wife says it looks like mud. It is dark but with a red hue. Strong coffee aroma. The mix with the vanilla actually makes it taste like cocoa. The taste is mildly sweet with a dark finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Brown color with medium head. Aroma of coffee, vanilla ice cream sandwich , nuts, roasted malt. Light texture. Lighter bodied porter. Makes it drinkable. Creamy. Dry finish. This is a solid beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at home. This tastes like a Cream Soda candle. There’s a lot of vanilla flavor kicking around, but it tastes noticeably artificial and not at all pleasant. The porter base is surprisingly bland -- any coffee, chocolate, or roasted notes are muted and fade away really quickly, which only allows the artificial vanilla to come through even more. It tastes cheap.

It seems like it has quite a few flaws, so I would not think that fans of highly-rated porters like the Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald would like it. However, it is on the mild side as far as overall flavor, so it is almost like a gateway beer for people who usually don’t like beer or only like shandies. It’s ok as a mild porter.

16 oz can at Nationwide Arena. Atwater Vanilla Java Porter is a deep brown brew with a mocha head. Nose is medium coffee with strong vanilla hints. Taste is a lightly sweet and mostly vanilla coffee experience. Body has a bit of silkiness with medium body. a decent vanilla coffee beer. A bit one note, but it does that one note well.

Aroma has strong vanilla with hints of coffee. Flavor is watery but has decent vanilla and chocolate notes. Aight.

Draught at The Craft Brasserie. Not so sure what all the hate is about, this one may be a tad gimmicky but for the abv it is tasty enough, vanilla and coffee flavors stand out with a fairly smooth and soft mouthfeel. Decent.

Smells like a candle, tastes like one too. Fakey flavors in this one. Will pass next time. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer starts off looking and smelling great. The color is dark and robust. You definitely smell the coffee aromas also. First taste is a great chocolate malt and then it has a very (almost too) smooth finish. Overall this is a very good beer
