11th October 2008. GABF. Clear dark brown beer. Smooth palate. Slighty toasted malt. The vanilla provides a nice balance to the dark flavours. Dry finish.

The color is very dark, almost black; small head. The aroma is not very interesting: light sourness, dirty water, dust, paper, coffee; confusing. Light body; cheap vanilla and coffee flavor, mild, with limited roastiness. Low bitterness, some from the roasted malts. Not very good.

A: The beer pours a very dark brown color with an initially large off-white head that dies down to a thin ring. S: Smells good at first. A lot of vanilla, a little bit of acidic coffee, and quite a bit of chocolate (that’s actually the best part). There is some roasted malt and a bit of metal. T: A heavy dose of roasted malt and coffee. The (fake) vanilla flavor is there and rather pungent as well. A touch of sour cherry on the back and as well as some metal. M: The body is medium with a medium to high carbonation. O: I could see this actually being pretty decent if it wasn’t for that sourness and metallic character.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Opaque black color with a 2-finger tan head. Aromas of coffee and vanilla. It’s mostly frothy carbonation, so the body is difficult to pin down. Flavor is primarily coffee with some vanilla. Towards the finish some chocolate shows up. Almost tart, almost sour, the finish is not sweet, but it’s not exactly bitter. Rather different brew.
