From Alefest Columbus. Not as much aroma as I expected. Dark, as a porter should be, with a creamy head. Flavor is vanilla, coffee and not much else. This one is true to the label. And while good, doesn’t have anything really special.

12oz bottle from Crossroads Beer & Wine, Burlington, MA. Cola like appearance - deep magohany brown with a ring of cream head; aroma of vanilla and chocolate; rather thin with a sweet chocolate malt taste with a hint of coffee towards the dry finish.

Pours dark brown with a foamy tan head. Scent is vanilla over coffee over chocolate. Taste is malty with the same trio as the scent. Very nice, mellow and easy sipping....no overbearing tones from any of the main flavours...Coffee bitters come on a bit at the end, which is a nice counterpoint to the sweetness at the beginning. This one is much better than it’s ratings suggest.

Poured in bottle from my buddy. Very sweet taste hits you with that vanilla burst. Aroma hits you hard as well. Dark definite malts shine through. Underrated for sure. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Really underrated sweet porter. This beer is just satisfying and delicious without being too rich. Aroma is straight chocolate and chocolate dominates the body with slight vanilla and coffee notes.

Brown pour with no head or lacing. Smell is coffee and vanilla. Taste is like a soda..a bit sweet, some coffee, vanilla, and chocolate notes. Thin body, some stickiness. Palate kind of disappears rather quickly.

Originally reviewed: 11/17/09. This brewery has just recently become available in this area. Thought I’d give it a shot. Poured into my pint glass. Pours a muddy brown, with tan edges. Small tan foamy cap. Little retention. Leaves some lace. Smells like citrus zest and a little sour funk. Some soy and molasses in their as well. Vanilla and java are absent in the nose. On to the taste. Starts out a bit roasty, but finishes sort of sour and off, like the scent. I can’t place any coffee in this at all, nor the vanilla sweetness. Some light bittering on the finish, but it’s pretty weak. Body is moderately carbonated and well-rounded. That’s the best I can do on this beer. Overall I was pretty disappointed with this offering. I hope this isn’t an example of what all their offerings are, but I am a little tentative to try the rest of the lineup now...

A beautiful black pour. An excellent aroma dominated by vanilla and java fragrances. A minimal head. After smelling it and seeing it I was excited to try it, but he flavor was thin and made me think of burnt coffee grounds. The actual drinking experience was a real let down. coffee, vanilla, black, minimal head, lightly sour, thin feel, flat, light body,

12oz bottle from the beer store in Southampton, PA. Deep black pour with a tiny bit of head. Minimal carbonation. The aroma is a full coffee/java blast, sort of french vanilla, some roasted malts coming through as well. Vanilla dominates the taste, with chocolate malt and coffee taking a backseat but still present. It’s light, as expected. This isn’t an imperial stout, fellas. Rate appropriately. 8 out of 100 in the style is just criminal.

Has a great aroma of rich chocolate and coffee. It taste of dark chocolates with heavy coffee and a nice vanilla mixed in. Its very good. One of the best java porters out there. This beer has been highly underated.

Draft at Shakespeare’s. Really nice, sweet, vanilla aroma. Fully opaque brown. Nice lace. Tastes like it smells. Some chocolate milk notes. Some sweetness and lactose notes. Pretty decent? A little thin but can’t expect much more from a 5.5% brew.
