Quake1028 (628), Tampa, Florida, USA Dec 25, 2007 12oz bottle courtesy of moejuck. I guess I poured this pretty vigorously because I ended up with half a glass full of sudsy tan head. Looks like a root beer float head. Pretty quick to recede though, does leave some decent lacing. Leaves a pretty thick layering of foam atop the beer. Body of the beer is dark brown with some red running through it. Nose is odd, some cocoa powder, some coffee, some chili pepper type spice, very light vanilla and some hop bitterness. Smells "dusty" or old, which throws everything else off. Fore is sour mash, old coffee grounds, chocolate and spice. Don’t know if this is a bad bottle or what, but there are definitely some off flavors and aromas here. Medium astringency. Medium bodied, appropriate for the style. Finish is light roasted notes, chili pepper and dark malts. Not a fan of this one at all. Couldn’t get past all the sour/old/metallic mustiness and it ended up being pretty much a drainpour.
epf33 (189), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Dec 4, 2008 tastes like an average porter cant taste the vanilla or the java very light chocolate notes an average beer zach8270 (1470), Henrietta, New York, USA Nov 27, 2008 (bottle - 12 oz) Black pour with a puffy tan head and great lacing. Aroma is a nice mix of coffee, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, and cream. The vanilla smells like good, real vanilla. Not imitation. Flavor is a major letdown. Instead of the wonderfully creamy flavor that I thought I would get from the aroma, instead the flavor tasted like watered down coffee grinds mixed with some burnt malts and a little chocolate. The vanilla had completely disappeared from the flavor and all I tasted was coffee. Not bad, but it was very watery and thin. Gabe511 (8), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA does not count Oct 22, 2008 12oz btl. Pours a good dark black. Not a strong aroma but has a sweet sugar and a definate roastiness with a slight vanilla. Flavor is the same kinda coffe roasty taste with some chicory as well. Didn’t get much vanilla out of it, but its slightly sweet. Real light mouthfeel and not as heavy as it looks. Not as good as i hoped. leeburg (105), My mom’s basement, Michigan, USA Oct 22, 2008 Updated: Oct 23, 200812 oz., cola in appearance, minimal head and lacing. Aroma of A1 steak sauce, old leather, something sour, and metal. Flavors... salt, soy sauce, fruit that’s past its prime. A little bit of coffee, but sort of stale, as though drinking stuff Monday that was left in the pot from Friday. Watery. Coffee and vanilla flavors kind of lost in translation somewhere.
Here’s what the lady said:
With this beer, I thought of my dad barbecuing shish-kabobs on the deck in the backyard. And then I got a flashback of two weeks ago... fiance and I were hiking on the Appalachian Trail and upon coming into a town and, happening upon a Kroger, I had the most satisfying bag of vinegar and salt chips. beerchugger (82), Colorado, USA Oct 15, 2008 It pours black. It’s a rather flat beer. No head, no lacing and the carbonation was very minimal. The flavor wasn’t very outstandish. Not much for flavor either. I would prefer it if I never had another one.
