How have I not rated this before mid-2012? I have not had it in years, but Atwater’s Vanilla Java Porter is the best tasting substance I have ever put in my mouth! It may not be the best representative of its style, but OMG it tastes good. Aroma of dark chocolate. Flavors include dark chocolate, vanilla and dark roast coffee. This might be the most perfect anything in the history of things! Too bad I only had access to it for a year or two, in variety 12-packs. With Yuengling coming to Ohio, my interstate beer runs have ceased, but maybe I need to head Northwest for one now?

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled in 10/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, brown bread, vanilla, light nuttiness, light herbal, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and coffee/vanilla spice notes; with decent strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toast, brown bread, light nuttiness, light herbal, and toasted earthiness. Light coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toast, brown bread, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity and solid robustness of dark/roasted malt and vanilla/coffee spice flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid spiced porter style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roasted malt and vanilla/coffee spice flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

I think I know how they got the name for this beer: coffee, vanilla and the style. A weak porter. I’m sitting here, staring at the beer and thinking what dogs must think when looking at their master who is watching TV instead of doing something obviously more fun. Look at master, look at fun thing, insert facial expression or adumbrations thereof, repeat.

Chestnut brown with couple mm of dust-brown head, fine, moderate-to-fast to fade, swirly film remaining. Aroma of perfumy vanilla, frozen corn cakes, Flavor of vanilla, light burnt crust, more corn cake, light grassy bitterness, watery body with moderate, somewhat prickly and hot carbonation. The aroma kills it. Yuck. The dog wouldn’t even drink it.

Deep brown with a cream head. Nose is vanilla, coffee, vanilla extract, and chocolate. Easy palate, vanilla extract, coffee, thin, and an easy finish.

This porter poured a deep black colour with a rocky, tan coloured head. Scents include vanilla, caramel and a little coffee. First swig had a little watery mouthfeel but the flavour of vanilla, cocoa, coffee and roast made up for that. Finish is roasty and sweet with roasted vanilla flavours lingering.

Bottle. Pours a solid dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate malt and noticeable vanilla. Flavor is chocolate, malt, mild coffee, and vanilla. There is a real cola feel to this with the sweetness and body which is most noticeable on the finish. Very thin body with medium carbonation which is amplified by the lack of depth and body. Very sweet porter. I like the presence of vanilla here but this really feels more like a soda than anything else.

it does get props for having vanilla in taste and aroma, but feels gimmicky; more soda like drink than beer - thin side; meh.
