3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Skyview (4859) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - MAR 2, 2012
Received a single 12-oz bottle from distributor. Pours an opaque dark cola brown colored brew with an average sized beige head that quickly dissipates to a cream top and spotty lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, a hint of toffee, floral hops and some light honey. Taste is medium to full bodied, malty caramel with some mild bitterness and a hint of soy. Finish is semi-sweet with some caramel malt, a hint of soy and floral hops. High alcohol is well-hidden. Closer to an imperial brown ale than a doppelbock.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 KickInChalice (771) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 16, 2012
UPDATED: FEB 22, 2012 Reviewed from notes. Originally reviewed 11/25/2008. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.
The beer has a dark caramel color with a small but noticeable head. The nose is roasted malt, caramel and chocolate. Soft flavors of coffee, chocolate, and caramel can all be detected. Medium body.
As one of my first experiences with Weizenbocks, I thought this was rather enjoyable. Despite its strong flavor, it is easily more drinkable that some heavier beers with similar taste characteristics.

12oz bottle. Pours deep amber with small white head. Aroma sweet stale bread caramel and dark fruit. Flavor the same, old stale candies and not much else. Medium body and sharp carbonation. Not a good doppelbock

Sampled at The Dabbler. Pretty ho hum. Not a whole lot of flavor to be found in this one.

The pour is incredibly dark brown with little to no head. A mellow dark malts aroma with hints of coffee and a light hop note. It does not overpower. The body is on the medium side. Toasted dark malts are upfront on the taste with a so-so bitterness and a clean hopped ending. A likeable beer but not extraordinary.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 superspak (767) - Michigan, USA - JAN 12, 2012
12 ounce bottle into tulip, bottled Oct 2010. Pours slightly cloudy dark reddish brown color with a fairly dense 2-3 finger khaki head with great retention that lasts for the whole glass. Some soapy lacing on the glass, with tons of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of light caramel, dark fruit, molasses, roasted malt, bread, and some spices. Ok aromas, but there really isn’t that much there that I can detect. Taste of caramel, spices, stale bread, molasses, citrus, light dark fruit, and toasted malt. Finish is pretty dry; with some lingering notes of caramel, spices, bread, and toasted malt on the finish for a bit. Medium carbonation and body; with a bit of a creamy mouthfeel that drinks pretty easily for being 9.5%. The positive note about this beer is the 9.5% is practically invisible. Overall this is an ok beer. The flavors are pretty lackluster and lack robustness for being 9.5%. Has good drinkability for the gravity though.

12 oz bottle. Part of a holiday 12 pack from Atwater. Pours dark brown with some ruby highlights. Zero head, none, nada. Aroma is dark fruits, dark bread and malt. Sweet dark fruit flavors followed quickly by a more bitter dark chocolate taste. A hint of earth as well. Palate was disappointing. Way thinner than I would have expected and no carbonation at all. Ok.

Bottle. Molasses, prune malt and alcohol aroma. Dark brown-black with moderate head. Slightly sweet molasses malt, oak and mild alcohol and herbal hops flavor. Not bad.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 DrSilverworm (1016) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 29, 2011
12oz bottle. Clear brown-red color, minimal tan head, some lace. Dark, fruity taste, strong alcohol nose. Like prune juice or something. Sweet taste. Light carbonation, decent texture, super-long aftertaste... Which in this case, was a bad thing. Not at all drinkable, was difficult to enjoy. Definitely one of the worst doppelbocks I have ever had (I usually love doppelbocks)

Bottle at home, rated against BJCP 2008 guidelines. Aroma: maltisweetness, toasted hints. Appearance: almost black with red highlights, thick-tan-long lasting head. Taste: very sweet, toasted malt, caramel, long wet finish. Palate: creamy, smooth, medium carbonation. Overall: i really like it, well balanced.
