| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 3, 2008 One bottle from JB at the Islands. Deep brown with nice reddish hues and a very long lasting head. Aroma was not that strong, just dark malt with a bit of toast. Flavor is malty, with some drying bitterness on the finish. Alcohol is noticeable at 1st. Then just blends in. Oh yea. phishpond417 (1953), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 28, 2008 Nice beer. It pours a very dark chocolate colour with a reddish hue. The head is slight with a tan colour, leaves behind very attractive lacing. Aroma is nutty, hint of oak and possibly a little bourbon as well. Mouthfeel is suprisingly lighter then what i expected, but pleasent regardless. Slightly bready, maybe maple syrup is what i taste also. Flavors are all around very well balanced and enjoyable, but i expected more of a thicker texture from a HG brew. JCB (1799), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jul 26, 2008 12oz bottle from Mrthirstyneck - thanks, Shane! Was jonesing for something sweet and malty, and a doppelbock seemed just the thing. Alas, this murky brown failure was not what I’d hoped. Thin body, almost no carbonation, and a minimal, cardboardy aroma. There are actually almost no malts detectable in the taste. It’s more like the shitty green tea you get in bad Chinese restaurants. Must be an infection, I guess, but this sucks. Butters (1689), Virginia, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 4/20 | Jul 22, 2008 Pours a clear dark brown with light brown highlights and good light tan head. Smells sweet and sour with huge molassis, anise, and some cinnamin. Flavor has some doppelbock qualities, but one big thing prevails: INFECTION. Very early stages of infection (small ring of doom starting to form on the bottle). I’ll certainly try this one again, but atwater needs to look into this. Gregis (1136), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 17, 2008 Bottle purchased at Corral Liquors in Granite City, IL. An explosive gusher, it pours 1 part cloudy mahogany liquid and 4 parts towering, sticky, fluffy, beige head. The nose seems more like a schwarzbier than a doppelbock: chocolaty bread dough, light caramel and a ton of yeastiness. Light to medium-bodied and creamy-slick with a mildly dry finish. The flavor pretty much follows the nose. An interesting interpretation of the style, but it reminds me more of Mönchshof Schwarzbier than any doppelbock that I’ve ever sampled. swoopjones (1933), Buffalo, New York, USA

Nose has some light coffee, roasted malts. Taste is somewhat watered down. Malty, cola, medium sweetness.Easy drinking but I expect some more oomph from a dopplebock lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 16, 2008 Pours dark brown, almost black, with red highlights and a full, off-white head. Aroma is really unique, possibly unpleasant, though I haven’t decided yet. Tons of breadiness in the nose, lots of dark fruit, brown sugar, sourdough, spiciness, root beer, slight sweet hazelnut notes. Flavor is somewhat bitter, burnt, and roasty, with balance coming from sweet maple brown sugar, slight dark fruit and hazelnut notes. There is something definitely amiss in the flavor, though. Nice dry finish. Not a breathtaking beer, but I feel like this beer is severely underrated. Indra (2041), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 1.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 4/20 | Jul 8, 2008 12oz. bottle. Sweet aroma of dark malts, caramel, dried fruit and some rather unwelcome musty, metallic notes. Deep brown color with a ridiculously foamy, sticky head. Flavor is again malty and dark, some faint hints of cola and cocoa, but these are swiftly overridden by old wet blanket and tartness. Palate is oddly drying and astringent, body is pretty full. This is pretty sure to be infected. Normally I wouldn’t rate a beer in this condition, but I had a Salvation IPA last night with the same problem, kinda leads me to believe there is a QC issue behind it. Needless to say, I didn’t finish the glass.
