The_Captain (280), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle - Very volatile opening, had to ease into this one, lot of carbonation. Foam head with lacing. Dark brown and malty a little roast. Rather even malt body but a little burnt bitterness and thin. Good carbonation throughout, Ok. SpringsLicker (1812), Tennessee, USA Aug 14, 2008 Thanks to buckybeer for this one.
Huge gushy head of tan.
Dark caramel malt aroma. No hops.
Smooth malty. Ron (737), Rochester, New York, USA Aug 3, 2008 One bottle from JB at the Islands. Deep brown with nice reddish hues and a very long lasting head. Aroma was not that strong, just dark malt with a bit of toast. Flavor is malty, with some drying bitterness on the finish. Alcohol is noticeable at 1st. Then just blends in. Oh yea. phishpond417 (1360), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jul 28, 2008 Nice beer. It pours a very dark chocolate colour with a reddish hue. The head is slight with a tan colour, leaves behind very attractive lacing. Aroma is nutty, hint of oak and possibly a little bourbon as well. Mouthfeel is suprisingly lighter then what i expected, but pleasent regardless. Slightly bready, maybe maple syrup is what i taste also. Flavors are all around very well balanced and enjoyable, but i expected more of a thicker texture from a HG brew. JCB (949), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 26, 2008 12oz bottle from Mrthirstyneck - thanks, Shane! Was jonesing for something sweet and malty, and a doppelbock seemed just the thing. Alas, this murky brown failure was not what I’d hoped. Thin body, almost no carbonation, and a minimal, cardboardy aroma. There are actually almost no malts detectable in the taste. It’s more like the shitty green tea you get in bad Chinese restaurants. Must be an infection, I guess, but this sucks.
