Viper666 (1210) - Saint-Hubert, Quebec, CANADA - AUG 9, 2007
Bouteille 500ml.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2010 Bottle. Almost clear ruby body topped by a very small beige head. Surprisingly fruity for a Scotch Ale. Red fruits flavours upfront such as berries and even a little strawberries! followed by some dark fruit (grapes, figs). Add to that some cake malts and it feels like a fruit-cake with the wrong selection of fruits. Light juice-like body not unlike some of Barberie’s offerings, and that’s not a compliment. A little sourness. Even the thick caramel flavours expected from a Scotch Ale are lacking. As a Scotch Ale this is a dismal failure but as some kind of soft fruity malted beer it is very drinkable. That’s a Barikade that needs more fortification.

Bottle. Pours a caramel-brown colour with a bubbly off-white head. The aroma is bready, candyish, maybe some strange spice, and sugar. The flavour is mildly roasty and subtle chocolate is evident. Coating palate that is somewhat medicinal at times.

Pours a clear brown color with ruby highlights and a medium beige head. The aroma reminds me a lot of MacIntosh Toffee. The flavor has burnt caramel and a warm presence of alcohol, in my book a 7% abv beer shouldn’t have an alcohol flavor ... The body is light with an oily texture and moderate carbonation. Not too good.

Lubiere (6979) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 17, 2007
An hazy murky brown ale with a thick lacing light moka head. A nutty burned caramel aroma with light notes of mashed berries, vinous, not bad. In mouth, a good caramel malt with spciy hops, a bit astringent, burned caramel, bitter chocolate, and warming alcohol in finale. Not as bad as I thought from previous rating, but again, its not the best scotch ale I tasted. Bought at Joanette, Nov. 2006. 4.99$.

Bottle (500ml). Shared with mds, my bottle via trade with Viper666. Poured deep brick-red, not much head. Odd herbal, vegetal pungent bitterness - scotch ale? Taste - again with the vegetal pungent character, maybe a bit of spice, weak malt, like a health food fresh juice drink, beets, celery, mint, carrots - odd, not boozy at all, and where’s the malt? Thin body, astringent and mildly carbonated, slightly harsh aftertaste. Not really horrid, but not much like any scotch ale I’ve ever tasted.

Brown bottle, 500 ml, purchased in December 2006 at Le Grand Duc; eye: dark burgundy, tiny beige head that disappears rapidly, light effervescence, opaque; nose: carameelized malt, candied fruits, hint of alcohol, syrupy, unpleasant odour that developped as the beer warmed; mouth: caramelized malt, candied dark berries, sugar, sweet almost syrupy finale with that taste that unfortunately relates to that unpleasant smell and reminding me of burnt rubber, unpleasant acridness that appeared after the finale, mildly sweet, quite acrid, medium body, slightly oily texture, average carbonation, lightly astringent; overall : disappointing FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 500 ml, 7 %, acheté che Le Grand Duc en décembre 2006; oeil : bourgogne foncée, petite mousse beige qui disparaît rapidement, légère effervescence, opaque; nez : malt caramélisé, fruits confits, petite pointe d’alcool, sirupeux, odeur désagréable et difficilement descriptible qui s’est développé alors que la bière a gagné en température; bouche : malt caramélisé, fruits noirs confits, sucre, finale sucré avec un petit goût désagréable rappelant le caouchouc brûlé, âcreté désagréable qui s’est développé après la finale, moyennement sucrée, très âcre, corps moyen, texture légèrement huileuse, carbonatation moyenne, légère astringence; en résumé : désappointant

500 ml bottle from Metro Joanette (December 2006), sampled from a Maudite glass at about cellar temperature. A largish slow-dying, bubbly tan head tops the red-permeated dark umber body, leaving just a touch of lacing as it fails....chocolaty aroma is pleasant at first, some nice tart cherry notes show up quickly, and thick caramel....but as it warms, odd strawberry-cream-cookie touches erupt, creating dissonance and disharmony....the rather faky vanillin touches don’t help, but I can’t sniff all day, it’s time to taste.....somewhat better perhaps on the palate, at least to begin with, rich and thick and caky like Quebec scotch ales tend to be, though that odd artificial strawberry note is still present....very smooth and mellow on the whole (not surprised that alcohol is on the low side), fairly drinkable after the first odd berry hints but really quite dull and uninspired, no burst of flavors, no smokiness or woody touches like I want in a good Scotch; boring rather lifeless mouthfeel, thick enough but cloying as the carbonation is low even for this style; no hop presence whatsoever. Peaty this ain’t. I’m afraid I’m descending into the lower half of Quebec Scotch ales, lord have mercy upon me....

(Rating #785)
