Bottle, under the new label "Maitre Brasseur Rousse Fumee Imperiale". Beautiful red brown with a tan head. Sweetly smoky aroma, a little meaty, very subtle underlying peaty caramel. Palate delivers the same sweet smokiness but in the correct balance to allow appreciation of the underlying fruity caramel. Finishes dry. Very nice.

I love this beer. The smoke taste is present, not overwhelming, balanced. The after taste is interesting, the smoke flavor is quality and I could taste a drop of ginger. Worth trying !!

Perfect body, not too thin, not too creamy. Smokiness is well balanced with a light hop bitterness.

Pours dark ruby red with a medium-sized head. Very minimal lacing here. Aroma is murky, with some red fruit, smoke, and peet. Overall flavor can be described as a softly sweet red ale with smoke at the back of the palate. Finish is relatively clean, making this a surprisingly drinkable “fumee” beer. Since I had this with a generous helping of spaghetti marinara, I am inclined to say this brew complements rich foods quite well. Decent, and perhaps one of Au Maitre’s better brews.

341 ml bottle from Trappe a Fromage, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Very deep copper, clear, decent tan foam. Aroma: Very strong smoke that is a mix of meaty and peaty in almost 50:50 proportions; a small amount of caramel and dried fruit tries desperately to claw its way to the surface, also a touch of bread crust with a slight metallic defect. Palate: Medium-ish body, fairly soft and sparse carbonation. Flav.: The smoke is dialled right back, leaving the stage to the light raisins, caramel, brown sugar and vaguely berry fruitiness; what’s left of the smoke is still meaty-peaty; on swallowing, there is some lighter fruitiness, burnt sugar and a little lingering smoke; off-dry with a touch of bitterness.

I like the interesting mix of smoke types and don’t really understand why the ratings are so low...

Bottle courtesy of boutip. Pours mahogany with a tan head. Smells peaty with some sweet caramel and flowers. Tastes lightly bitter and has a pronounced smoky character.

Bottle - 341ml. Pours a hazy dark brown body with average carbonation and a decent beige frothy head. Pleasant and well balanced malty/hoppy aroma with caramel hints. Its nice hoppy taste carries some smokey-roasty notes. It ends with a decent bitter/smokey finish. Overall, smokeyness is not agressive, which makes that enjoyable beer a rather good introduction to the style for people that are not familiar to smoked beer.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a thin offwhite head. Nice aroma of smoked malt, reminds me of smoked ham. The flavor also has smoked malt, it’s not as intense as other rauchbiers, but it’s none the less interesting. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and moderate carbonation.
