341 ml bottle from Jovi, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. Labelled as “L’Obscure” (three aliases...is this stuff under witness protection or something??). FE15/08.

App.: Deep black with a greyish-tan head. Aroma: Tangy and funky, ashen malts, wood, sour fruits, opens up a bit as it warms to reveal some slightly “better” chocolate malt notes. Palate: Medium-full body, slightly powdery, soft carbonation. Flav.: Burnt toast (or a tumour), yeast, fruits (restrained), a touch of tang and funk, a touch of molasses, slightly off-dry and yet a little bright, a hint of bitterness.

The “Belgian” attitude lessened with time and temeprature, and the beer became more agreeable.

Thanks to Cole for the share! Pours a dark brown. The aroma is roasty, fruity and spicy. The flavor has... woah, smoke? A smoked Belgian porter? Cool! Smoke, chocolate, ash, plums, estery notes and coffee. Weird, but really cool.

Bottle, thanks to Cole. Pours reddish-brown, thin pale tan head, poor/spotty lacing. Nose is Belgian yeast, smoke, roast, groovy fruit esters play off spice, soap, coffee and smoked meat. Flavors are smooth and roasty, lightly soapy, nice fruit and smoke, light jerky notes. Well-balanced, if a bit thin.

pours black with almost no head. Roasty malt aroma. Slightly salty. Some chocolate. Bold and malty with a ton of smoked malt. Yeasty chocolate malt flavours with tones of smoke. Its like sitting by the camp fire. This kicks ass a Belgian smoked porter.!!!!!

Great black colour with a thin lace. Nice malt flavour of malt and liquorice. Roasted berry aroma. Smooth texture with subtle flavours of the roast malt. Very nice porter.

Bouteille 341ml.

341mL bottle from a trade with Lubiere, thanks Luc. Pours a deep dark brown with a large tan head. The aroma is chalky, notes of dry dark chocolate and slight roasty malts. Pretty standard porter aspects. Flavour is very sweet, lots of chocomalt and mild roast, bit of a thin feel as one might expect from the style. Finish is very metallic and watery, which doesn’t necessarily offend me though it’s still a weakness. Drinkable though definitely on the sweeter side of things and in need of balance. Slightly rum aspect to it as well which is kind of bizarre. Decent enough.

Labeled as L’Obscure. Pours a cola brown with small white head. Cola & light roastiness in the aroma. Toasty & roasty taste up front, Falls off after initial roastiness. Light smoke in finish. Lighter to medium mouthfeel. Sort of tastes dirty. Some sweetness after smokiness. Average at best

In short: A weird plywood flavoured beer. Strangely almost drinkable.
How: Bottle 341ml, age unknown but consumed shortly after purchase
The look: Very dark brown (almost black) body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose is slightly smoky with notes of plywood. Taste has a lot of plywood, raisins, ripe white and dark grapes, some nutty fudge. A good amount of toasted malts, and earthy hops but an annoying overall sensation of moisture. Fortunately not very tasty. All in all this beer is not cohesive. Obscure means vague, doubtful, murky.

Bottle, as l’obscurre. Rumlike nose, molassis Dark brown, creamy brown layer on top. Impressive wooden cognac and rum flavor on top of the usual roast and coffee notes, chocolat covered cherries, quite unexpected at the low strength. Mellow, light sparkly mnouthfeel. Medium body. coffeeroast and rum retronasal. Quite nice I thought.

Lubiere (6979) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 26, 2008
A clear dark brown ale with a quickly dissipating big bubbled, lifeless, light beige head. Aroma of Nestle quick and mashed peas. In mouth, a rater watery roasted malt with little body, some lactic points. Bought as L’Obscure. Shows 6%...doesnt feel like that in mouth! Tasted Oct. 26 2008.
