A nice clear dark brown ale with a thin off white head. A rather herbal caramel aroma, with notes of copper and chlorine. In mouth, a nutty malt with light hops and cleaning liquid. Medium bodied. Tasted March 2007.

Bouteille 500ml.

(Rating #1173)

Bottle shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. pours a hazy reddish-brown with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma: What th’?! That’s an odd one, it’s not bad, just...odd. Caramel malt, spices, nuts, sugar and...? Flavour of Xmas spices, caramel malt, nuts, some alcohol and a long, slightly odd, bitter finish. Average bodied. Overall it’s O.K. but not something I’d buy in the future.

Sample courtesy of Hogtown Harry. Mild sourness in weird aroma. Cloudy brown, small white head. Taste is like rusty hops (in makes sense to me), caramel, spice, all brought together with a weird earthiness. Ok quencher I guess, just odd.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2007 Bottle (500ml). Shared with blankboy, my bottle via Viper666. Very cloudy deep chestnut brown, small frothy head. Smells .. odd - reminds me of light epoxy, fructose, mild alcohol - just damned weird. Taste is very leafy - like dried maple leaves in the fall, dry cocoa powder, cigar ash, very dry weedy hops & grain. Thick, still and bitter mouthfeel, a little boozy and harsh in the long finish. Not horrid, but strange.

The pour reveals a murky brown color with a thin beige head. The aroma has mild smoked malt with strong caramel malt that gives a feeling of crème brulée. The flavor is centered around malt, smoked and caramel with a herbal feeling and a bitter finish. The body is light to medium with gentle carbonation. Not bad.

My Bottom Line:
A deeply bready caramel malt aroma dissolves into a shy flavor profile and creamy body aiming for drinkability. A cleanly-brewed, simple amber ale which distinguishes itself with its potent nose, but not much else.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam settles atop the dark red.
-Finishes rather dry with the help of some herbal hop bitterness.
-The flavor profile isn’t as caramelly as the nose, thankfully. You could definitely foresee cloying sweetness from its aroma, but you won’t get it, don’t worry.

Bottle; no date.
