3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
The color is incredible nice, red-brown with a cense, creamy head. The aroma has notes of malt, nuts, light sweetness and light hints of milk chocolate. The flavour has a light sweetness, notes of nuts, malt, caramel, and it ends with a hint of milk chocolate and a dry, very light bitterness. A very nice surprise.

Malt and coffee aroma. Barnyard smell. Sweetish, malty taste with chocolate and licorice. A bit skunky.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: APR 15, 2006 Bügelverschlußflasche: Chestnut coloured with a small fluffy off-white head, slowly vanishing; slightly sweet-malty nose with a touch of caramel and a delicate, but distinctive touch of aromatic hops; robust bitter, mainly dry flavour, only a little bit of sweetness in the wings; dry, almost a bit smokey, malty finish with a lingering aromatic bitterness, soft MF. An almost perfect Dunkel in the franconian way......

UPDATED: JUN 2, 2009 500ml bottle (BeerAngel.de)
Massively grainy aroma, slightly porridgy - a bit pile of soggy malted husky grain. Pleasant carbonation, full palate. Simple but tasty grainy taste, full husk component. Finish a bit thin, unfortunately, as this is a taste I’d like to have hanging around. There are some hops, but they’re restricted to a light tingle in the mouth. Very drinkable, and a celebration of beers not having to be outrageous in order to be interesting. Tasty any time, any season.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2006 (swing topp bottle) Dark orange to amber colour with a nice foamy, almost beige head with lace. Noble aroma of dark toasted malt with gentle herbal and slightly floral hops. Bitter flavour with a fine sweet malty taste, medium bodied, well-carbonated, soft mouthfeel, bready taste with caramel; dry and bitter, herbal hoppy finish with a touch of honey. Almost perfectly rounded and balanced Dunkel: Champions League !

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Light foxy amber-orange with small, beige head. Caramel, sweet bread (made with eggyolk and sugars) and Maillard, bit of parsley. The caramel is of a specific type; certain chewy bonbons with moccha & tad smoked. Again faintly smoked caramel, bonbons but hardly sweet; even certain bitterness, dark but fresh leaves and a marked carbonation attributing both to flavour and refreshing MF. Warming up, I get some peanut-like flavour, and touches of cacao. Light without being thin, refreshing even. Ends more full. Excellent Dunkel, neither too sweet, neither too thin, full-flavoured. Danke vielmals, Sebastian!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line :
This elegantly toasty lager is balanced out by herbal hops and their bitterness in a svelte mouthfeel. This is redolent of a Vienna more than a classic Dunkel.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A ring of foam circles the clear dark amber.
-Their toasted malt character is different from any other toasted malts I’ve had. Gives them a nice house personality in their Zwickl, Festbier and Dunkel.
-There are no roast notes at all. Even the toast character could be considered moderate.
-The herbal hops possess wet, nearly vegetal edges.
-This is barely darker than their Zwickl; they are obviously of the same lineage in the grain bill and hop profile as well.
On tap at the brewery restaurant.

bottle, traded with Frankenland. Clear brown colour, large head. Aroma of roasetd malt. Flavours of malt, roasetd malt, bitte chocolate, cocoa powder and caramel. Quite hoppy for a Dunkel. A very nice and a bit unusual example.
