Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

Augustijn, or Stefanus or whoever did start that brewery (or is the patron of it) did a really good job! Though it doesn’t not belong to the Holy Trinity (which would become Holy Quadrity?), it is not far out: the beautiful copperish beverage delivers smoothly its qualities: a round and well-developed taste, light in aromas but a balanced bitter-sweet for an overall great degustation!

Assaggiata come ST STEFANUS BLONDE (6 mesi in bottiglia). ASPETTO: biondo carico, limpido, schiuma bianca, fine, abbondante e e persistente. AROMA: speziato, fruttato, intenso e interessante.

Hazy orange/gold color. Aromas of banana, some phenols, and alchol. Quite sweet with rich banana flavor and a touch of hops in the end. Good beer, but not amazing. Good "starter" Belgian.

Hazy deep honey color with medium white foam. Aromas are light of light base malt with smoother aged smell to it reminding lightly of pear and apple (very much in a way like a lager would smell). Palate, medium body, with somewhat thikness to texture but still quite slick leaving yeasty, banana like finish. Taste, Is more on sweet side with notes of malt, yeast (reminding of wheat beers) having tones of bananas and nut oil. Overall, not bad, not amazing. Quite light not boozy as I thought it would be, sweetish and texture and taste do remind of german hefeweisens? And something way lighter than any other Belgian strong ales, quite easy going. Give it a try.
