Bottle: Unfiltered
Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

BOTTLE 33 CL as St. Stefanus Blonde at 7% abv. Clear amber with a small sediment, off-white sticky head. Aroma: white bread, astringent fruit, more phenolic than spicy, nutty. Taste: very dry, almost devoid of malts and fruity esters, warming alcohol, fruit stone and nutty notes. A bit harsh, but decent.

Clear golden, minimally sparkling, frothy off-white head, sticky lacing. Belgian yeast, mixed fruits, mainly apple, banana, wheat. Quite strong carbonation, fizzy feel, medium body, long finish, semisweet, grain, earthy feel, also flower notes in finish. Ok, tasty, earthy. Advent beer 9.

Bottle from Drinkshop. A kind of trippely candyish green apple flavour here, which makes it exactly the kind of Belgian beer which I do not enjoy very much. Other than that it is pretty clean with alcohol hidden well. Also rather easy drinking. Overall not bad, just not exactly my stuff.

330ml bottle from Tesco, as St. Stefanus Blonde. Big bubbly white head lasts well, nice little lacing. Clear golden amber body. Light fruity nose, apple, banana, straw, bread. Flavour is sweet malty bread, gentle fruit, buttery finish. Strength is quite noticeable in the taste. Light carbonation, real fizz on the tongue, mouthfeel fairly thick with a sticky finish, certainly not what I’d expect in a blonde.
