Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

33 cL bottle, courtesy of KimJohansen. Pours cloudy dark orange with a huge white head. Aroma is mild phenolic and slight fruity yeasty. Mild fruity, yeasty and light phenolic flavoured. Mild citric touch. Smooth fruity and yeasty flavoured finish.
Earlier Rating: 2/3/2008 Total Score: 3.2
33 cL bottle. Pours deep orange and golden with a huge off-white head. Classic Belgian yeast aroma, quite strong malt accent and a solid alcohol note. Flavour is much the same, quite strongly flavoured from spiced yeast and barley/alcohol leads into a sweet almond/marzipan like finish. Reminds me alot about a dobbel bock. Certainly not a triple at all.

A hazy orange beer with a small beige head. The aroma is sour with notes of oranges - quite boring. The flavor is sweet malty with a weird spice combination, that I can’t put names to. Thanks Carlo (lachesis) for giving Jeppe this.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Clear yellow with a rough white head. Tart, yeasty and phenollic aroma - almost like a cheap white wine. Medium body, fruity, yeasty and again this grape-like character. No real bitterness but some alcohol in the finish. 211009

(Bottle 33 cl) Also spelled "Zw˙ntje"! Brewed for the town festival in Zwijnaarde. Pale golden and hazy with a tall and thick head. Sweetish and malty beer with a huge sediment. Fruity notes and a bitter finish. Very standard Van Steenberge. 190302

(Bottle 33 cl) Dark golden with a nice full head, lots of sediment. Very full-bodied and with a very evident alcohol. OK indeed, but a bit rough and characterless as with some Bios beers. 270394
Earlier Rating: 6/21/2005 Total Score: 2.8
(Bottle 33 cl) Golden with a very large head. Aroma is sweet, reminiscent of honeyed fruit. Delicate mouth feel that is slightly sweet but not really malty or caramely. Has a lemony tartness that is quite interesting. As with a lot of Bios beers you have a suspicion that this is just one of theit regulars with a different label, but it’s hard to tell. Golden coloured. Aromatic fruity aroma - smells like ripe peaches. Sweet, vanillaish and medium bodied, but dangerously drinkable. Not much bitterness, so the finish is more like a fruit salad.
