Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

bottled. Very typical hazy golden tripel. Bubbly tongue covered in spicy sour fruit. A little simple. I had it w/ a cigar (KubaKuba) so this rating could be full of shit...

Hazy deep honey color with medium white foam. Aromas are light of light base malt with smoother aged smell to it reminding lightly of pear and apple (very much in a way like a lager would smell). Palate, medium body, with somewhat thikness to texture but still quite slick leaving yeasty, banana like finish. Taste, Is more on sweet side with notes of malt, yeast (reminding of wheat beers) having tones of bananas and nut oil. Overall, not bad, not amazing. Quite light not boozy as I thought it would be, sweetish and texture and taste do remind of german hefeweisens? And something way lighter than any other Belgian strong ales, quite easy going. Give it a try.

28.04.2016, tap (as St. Stefanus Blonde) @ Apollon:
Small slightly fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet fruity, weeds, bubblegum, yeast, overripe banana, sugar, grass, old hay, overripe tropical fruits. Taste is slightly dry grassy, weeds, yeast, hay, minerals, alcohol, overripe banana, grain, sugar, bubblegum. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and watery mouthfeel. Boring.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2016 Oranje, aardig uiterlijk. Vrij weinig geur en smaak, ook iets teveel carbo. Jammer.

Rich hazy amber color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of yeast, bananas, & spice; Flavor of sweet malt, yeast, fruit (notably bananas), cloves, light hops, and spice; Slight alcohol at the finish; Nicely balanced; Solid brew.

33cl bottle. Expiration date: 03.2017 Clear, orange color. Average, frothy and white head. Diminishing. Average lacing. First wheat and fruits. Later oranges, bananas. Well balanced taste. Light sweet, bitter and sour. Oily, sticky and little bit gritty mouth feel. Soft carbonation, little bit spicy, sometimes salty. There is a lot of things going on here in mouth. Maybe little bit too chaotic, but still I’ve found it interesting. Long soft dryness in a finish.
