Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

A heavy amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of citrus and spice is present with elements of grain. A flavor of citrus, spice and a slight bread aspect to it. A light and airy finish.

Bottle labelled St Stefanus Blonde. Sweet belgian yeast not unlike a tripel but more grain. Loads of carbonation a very light beer in terms of flavor. Certainly not bad, but over before it starts. Watery finish. Quite unremarkable, but at the same time a solid foundation.

Bottle at home. Murky orange with a white head. Notes of herbal hops, caramel, yeast, spices and alcohol. Medium bodied, medium to high carbonation and a bitter-sweet carbonation.

0.33l bottle. This is a cloudy golden colored one with a nice medium sized white bubbly head on the top. It smells really bready, dough and a little yeast. Floral hints but a really mild nose. It’s somewhat high on the carbonation and in the mouth it has a nice oily texture. Tastes nice also with a sweet flavor dominating the flavor profile. Soft sugar, sweet melon. A little Belgian twist and a floral dry aftertaste. Nice non compiled one. 13.02.2016

Bottle from Tesco. Pours a hazy orange gold, initially with small head which sadly goes away quite quickly. Aroma is banana, slightly herbal, brow sugar, malt and a note of hops. Taste is medium to strong sweet but quite nicely balanced with a dry bitterness. Not the best beer I have had of this style but certainly quite good. I would like to put a bottle back for a year and see how a bit of age changes it.

Bottle, 7% ABV. Pale orange color, almost clear liquid, white head. Light banana smell, higher carbonation. Light aroma of bananas. Taste is light hoppy bitter, bland, watery. Alcohol is hidden. Poor.

Hazy straw-amber body, medium creamy white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, spicies, bread, metallic. Flavours of belgian yeast, fruity notes, grain, metal. Medium yeasty dry finish, slightly metalic. Medium body and high carbo. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
