Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

4 year old bottle I poured this into a snifter-type glass, not quite a Trappist style. It originally poured out straw colored like a Duvel, then turned yellowish-brown as sediment swirled in. The foamy head almost boils away. It's got a big Belgian smell and taste of oranges, coriander, candi sugar and honey. First beer I tasted that reminded me of honey, after dozens of “honey weisses.” Rather pleasant to sip while relaxing.

33cl bottle as St Stefanus Blonde. Thanks to Andrea. It pours a clean orange color with a large off white head. Aroma is sweet and malty with rich figs and dried fruit notes. Light alcohol presence. More sweet and malty notes in the taste, with biscuit, bread, dried fruits. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, ok

Rating from St Stefanus Blonde. This should be a different entry. different abv probably different beer altogether. whatever alias or its called, this beer rocks. Pours lightly hazy orange hue with a nice bubbly white head and vigorous carbonation. Nose of noble hops, lite citrus, apples, flavors of nice grassy hops, lite citrus, spice. carbonation is heavy with lots of prickly action on the tongue which elevates the spice elements in the beer. FInish is long with lingering notes of brown sugar, apples, spicy hops and belgian yeast. Fantastic Belgian ale if you ask me. and its not a BSA.
