An excellent strong ale. Deep golden hues with a generous head. Had it in the breweries bar so very well preserved, perfectly aged. Aroma of Apricots and pears, spice, a hint of herbs, the flavor is very nicely balanced between fruit ester and spice finishing clean and dry. Pairs well with WestV or any Abbey cheese. The marketing director said requests to have it placed below sea level when exporting on not always heeded and thus it could explain some low ratings for this fantastic beer as it’s a living product best drank near the source. It will be sold as St. Stefanus grand cru in the US due to battles with Augustiner in Munich.

330mL from International Beer Collector BB 19/8/16 Hazy blonde beer, lively looking - holds a good dense creamy inch of head. Subtle aroma; cereal malts, white sugar, a pretty decent measure of floral, spicy hops, faint tropical/ripe stonefruit note. Good weight on the body, sits rather nicely, creamy almost velvety , lifted carbonation - doesn’t seem like a 9% beer! Palate starts sweet - cereally, pilsner/pale malts, white sugar, apricots, unripe peach, even a bit of rockmelon, with peppery phenolics & hint of floral grassy hops. Moderate bitterness, lingering spice on long finish. Rather liked this - not as polished as better Tripels, but nice flavour.

330ml bottle (Alus Celle, Riga). Clear amber color. Medium size, thick white head, stays. Dead yeast, caramel, alcohol, faint fruity notes, malty and straw in aroma. Plastic, alcohol, caramel, burnt sugar, papery taste. Crisp mouthfeel. Malty plastic in aftertaste. And faint spicy hops in late late aftertaste.

Nice amber colour with large frothy white head. Aroma is dominated by musty belgian yeast, with honey, toast and apricot jam. The taste is the same but with a very strong booze. Medium bodied and spicy on the tongue. Not bad at all but the lack of subtlety with the booze really detracts.

Bottle. Golden, honey pour with lasting head. Aroma: almond paste, soap, grass, lemon, hint of pine, boozy touch. Taste is sour and sweet, almost like a candy. Hint of almond paste. Slightly boozy, cherry. Robust. Bitterness in the development. Nice.

average frothy white head. good lacing. mostly diminishing. sparkling hazy thick dark orangeish-amber body. aroma: light hoppy, pineapple, white wine, alcohol. if: moderate sweet. ff: light acidic bitter; average duration. palate: light medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation, metallic moderate alcoholic finish. 60 s

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - it’s a gusher. Golden with a large head. Nose - banana bread and a touch of vanilla. Taste - more vanilla and banana custard. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a dry tangy finish. Overall - it’s good even if not exciting on terms of Belgian standards.

Bottle from Brother David. Yes this is strong - taste is dominated by strong alcohol and the dry, fruity finish means this could almost be confused with a white wine. Lacks the depth of flavour or complexity of the top end Belgian strong ales such as Kwak or the Chimays but still a more than decent way to slip into unconsciousness.

Not the greatest Belgian by any means, but not sure some of these low ball scores below are really accurate. Minimal nose & a golden pour that offers a bubble bath style foam that disappears quickly. Fairly tasty with flavours of yeasty graham crackers, faint apple cider, & candy store syrup. Mrs Tiki steals a sip -- gasp! -- & she loves it (keep in mind she generally snubs beer aside from the odd Belgian).
