3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(Bottle, Priory Arms, Stockwell, London, 23 July) Colour is dark amber with ruby notes, disappearing off-white head. Nose is malty with cereal, caramel and dried fruit (raisins, prunes), sweetish. Very nice aroma. Taste is malty and roasted with cereal and caramel. Slightly sweet. Firm body but smooth to drink. A nice German dunkel, came as a welcome break from all the bitters on my English holiday.

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma, caramel with slight toffee off in the distance. Dark amber/ruby pour with no head (well, it did last for two or three seconds). Acidic and slightly metallic. Taste is roasted malts, caramel, sweet. Medium body. Very lightly hopped. Simple and, well, not my thing.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: SEP 19, 2007 On tap at Berliner Bierfestival. I was not content with it this time, so I let my old rating stand unaltered. It was served clear, copper-colored, with a beige head. Malty nose with some sweet caramel to follow. The same goes for the flavor, but there was an unpleasant touch of cooked vegetables there as well. Medium body, it could use more fullness. It finished with caramel and the rest of the cooked vegetables. Rating: 5-4-4-3-8-2.4.
Bottled. Reddish-brown with a beige head. Caramel and lightly roasted malt in aroma. Weak flavor, with some sweetness, caramel and roastiness. Medium to thin body and a slightly dry finish. Decent but boring. (060518)

Bottle @ Reading Beer Festival 2006. Sweet malty toffess. Body fairly full and not to sweet with plenty of malty flavours. Not my type of beer usually but fairly nice.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Augustiner Bierhall. Translucent and chestnut-mahogany in color with a thick tan fluff for the head that boasts formidable retention. Cleansing stainless steel smells meets up with cocoa powdered pecans, a little tree bark, caramel-mocha macchiatos, bakers chocolate and dense fudge brownies. Big dunkel flavor bill. Fudgie chocolate wafers and a heavily chocolate-accented French silk pie flavor. Some milk chocolate protrudes as well. Carbonation is up there, teaming with a medium-bodied toffee-esque chocolate stream. Semi-sweet chocolate morsels meet toffee brittle, evolving into a chocolate pancake motif. Some whole wheat loaves come out in the finish, dashed with cocoa powder and a aftertaste akin to easy going pumpernickel bread.
