BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 9, 2012
500ml brown bottle, taken at The Cask Pub and Kitchen, London Oct 2011. This light golden coloured beer could have been a regular Pils/Helles; at first it looked and had the smells you’d expect from a Munich breweries bier. However the smell began to become more pronounced, caramel and toffee esters began to merge with the usual grainy hop aromas normally found in Munich light coloured biers. Sweetish and very easy to drink, the hops although playing second fiddle to the malts do assert themselves at times and make this an interesting and refreshing drink. The alcohol isn’t completely hidden, not quiet enough depth of flavours to blank it out, it doesn’t sit in your face, but you can certainly feel it below the surface.

Aroma: Not very appealing. Musty, malty aroma. Soil, grass, flowers... Mouthfeel: Medium To Full, a little creamy. Taste: It has quite a character. Honeyish, tart, spicy, with some balancing bitterness. Not very enjoyable, has some bad grassy notes. Finish: Rather poor. Some mild warmness, spicyness, acidity. Overall: Not very tasty, but has its own character.

Draught (as Augustiner Maibock) at GBBF 2011. Deep golden color. Very honeyish aroma. Sweet bready and honeyish malt taste. Very mellow, could have more hops for a balance. Surprisingly honeyish a bit mead like flavor.

(50 cl bottle from Bavarian Imports/bayersk.dk) Pours a clear strawcoloured golden with frothy but quickly dissipitating white head. The aroma is lightly cereal with sweet notes and a faint, fresh floral whiffs from what I assume is the hops. On the palate it is fizzily carbonated, thin-textured with a medium body and a light, bitter finish. The taste is lightly sweet and lightly refreshingly floral bitter. Overall it’s a refreshing beer with more of a taste than most of the pale lagers I’ve ever tasted. A good session beer except for the alcohol strength!

Bottle 50 cl from Getränkemarkt at Wallstrasse, München. Poured clear golden in colour with foamy white head. Sweet malty in aroma with faint hints of alcohol pushing through. Quite hoppy, grassy and malty sweet in flavour. Nice somewhat bitter aftertaste.
