I don’t quite ’get’ the average rating of 3.94. I picked this one up because it ended in ’ator’ and was labelled as dark, so I could only assume it’s a Doppelbock, which I like when done really well. This reminds me a lot of the H.C. Berger Dopplebock . . . sweet, and flat. (And, yes, the Berger is really spelled ’Dopplebock.’) Nice, sweet, coffee-like (and fruit-like) touch in the aroma, but like the Berger, it falls flat for the most part elsewhere. Nice flavor, but just really flat. Brownish-black color, pretty standard for a good doppel. Head disappears very quickly. I have to warn you: if you don’t like highly sweet beers, you won’t like this. I like it myself, but I like sweet beers. But it disappoints to the extent that it doesn’t have a robustness to it that you get in the Ayinger Celebrator or Weltenburger Asam-Bock, the only two doppels I’ve tried that really impress me. Like the Berger, I’d put this around a 3.5. Actually may not be as flat as the Berger, but still could have been crafted better. Alcohol content is pretty pleasing, though.

Bottle sample at an Imperial Beer Tasting at the Norma Jean in Jaffa, hosted by beerandbeyond. Clear reddish brown, minimal off white foam. Raisins, roast, cherry, flowers aroma, rich sweet taste. Full body, smooth texture and soft carbonation. Nice caramel finish. Good and balanced.

Lovely deep red. Big, malty brew, probably a good showcase of the style. I prefer more inventive takes, some more dryness would have lifted this a lot.

Scrapersnbeer (444) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - APR 12, 2012
Aroma of currants, plums, caramel and brown sugar simmering in a pan. It’s a dark red beer, yet crystal clear all the way through. Very sugary sweet flavor, like rum only with out the booze punch. No much bitterness. In fact, the alcohol is well hidden, as this is fairly tame for a doppel. This is sold in four packs of 330ml’s, and you might be able to finish them over the course of an evening. A good starter for the style.
