If a stout and a pilsner had a lovechild, it would be Black Thunder. It would also be a miracle, because beer can’t “get it on.” This miniature powder keg starts with a roasted, bread-like complexity but finishes dry and clean like a pilsner. It’s dark, distinctive, and dry.
Hops: German Magnum, Tettnanger, Saaz, Hallertau
Malts: Pils, C-60, Chocolate Wheat, Debittered Black
Yeast: Urquell Lager

At Freeman’s BBQ. Pours a dark brown, light brown head. Aromas of light roast, light cocoa powder. Taste is sweet with fruity yeast notes. Medium light body and easy drinking.

12oz beer. Walnut color, clear-ish, with light lacing, and a small off-white head. Pretty nice aroma, chocolate malts dominate. Taste is as advertised, not overpowering, pretty good schwartz! Traditional, with a kick. Nice medium mouthfeel/palate, with a light lingering bitterness. Recommended!

Rated based on notes taken 23 May 2012 -- A well made schwartzbier. A tad bit on the light side. Needs just a little bit more stuff to it. But it’ll drink just fine.

Can at home. Pours black, tan head. Aroma is chocolate, toast, faint biscuit. Nice. Taste is cocoa, coffee, toast, roasted malts, biscuit. Clean finish, crisp, a faint bitterness. Medium body, high carbonation. Thin mouthfeel. I enjoyed this, a lighter stout like beer with crisp finish. Could have one on a hot day and not be overwhelmed.

Pour from a can, is a nice opaque amber with a thin white head. Aroma is soft and smoky. Taste is a slight bitter malt taste with hints of smoke. Leaves a clean after taste.

Pours black with a tan frothy head. Not a strong Aroma, but it’s a nice malty sweetness. Taste is sweet. Very little roasted or hoppy flavors. What is roasted is a light finish. Light carb and mouthfeel. Very easy to drink. Good example of an interesting beer that doesn’t try to be awe inspiring unique

Nice deep cola coloured body with a brown glow, hints of auburn and violet and a thick, rich, five centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of milk, nuts, earth, copper, roasted malt and a hint of light coffee. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt flavour with a lot of earth, some smooth chocolate and coffee flavours and the hints of pecans and walnuts throughout. Aftertaste is well-balanced and showing some good malt notes coupled with a pleasant caramel and toffee sweetness. Overall,a good schwartz with a big nutty and caramel flavour and a subdued yet strong sweet finish that couples well with the rich malts. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Whip-In in Austin, Texas on 05-May-2014 for US$2,69 sampled at home in Washington on 06-November-2014.
