COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
If a stout and a pilsner had a lovechild, it would be Black Thunder. It would also be a miracle, because beer can’t “get it on.” This miniature powder keg starts with a roasted, bread-like complexity but finishes dry and clean like a pilsner. It’s dark, distinctive, and dry.
Hops: German Magnum, Tettnanger, Saaz, Hallertau
Malts: Pils, C-60, Chocolate Wheat, Debittered Black
Yeast: Urquell Lager

UPDATED: APR 28, 2013 Draft poured. Dark almost black with practically no head. Hard to tell the aroma in this glass. Flavors are light roast, chocolate, malt, easy hops on the finish. Goes down smooth and tasty but not remarkable

draft. light chalkiness in the nose along with the obligatory black patent char with lighter milk chocolate notes. medium body, lightly pasty, creamy carbonation and creamy body suggesting oats (which I see now is chocolate wheat, ok). pleasant soft minerallic yeast character.

What I can see through the mouth of the can is a dark-brown color. The aroma is of delicious, roasted malts, dark caramel malts, and what you normally get in the nose from well-made lagers. In the mouth, it’s almost English in style, dominated by roasted, toasted malts that impart a slight woody, chocolate flavor that manages to steer the beer away from applying its inner lager to the palate. It finishes relatively clean with hints of roast, and a cold, tongue-puckeringly condensed, slightly oily bitterness in a manner that reminds me of wood stain. Not bad... and a great Schwartzbier.

Draught at the Alamo Drafthouse - S. Lamar, Austin, Oct. 20. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small lasting creamy tan head and lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoke, toasted malt, caramel and notes of coffee & chocolate. Malty flavour is lightly toasted along with some light smoky notes and nuts. Medium bodied. A nice, easy to drink Schwarz.

Can at the Saucer. Pretty dark pour. Roast, cocoa, and a bit of dark fruitiness. Light-medium bodied. Pretty decent, and quite good for a schwarzbier, but that’s not saying all that much.

Aroma is roasted malts, dark fruit, and hints of chocolate. A dark brown/black pour with a mostly diminishing tan head and minimal lacing. Taste is roasted malts and some bitterness. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall an enjoyable Schwartzbier. Would drink again.

Dark maple-like brown. No head. Maple syrup and lemon juice on the nose. Very general roasted malt kinda simple. Nice mouthfeel with a little roasty toasty finish. A little too mellow. Good for its style. But not rating that high overall. From can. ---That dog will hunt!

12 oz. can from a buddy in Texas- thanks again, Bryan! Pours a deep cola brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of toasted malts, brown sugar, earth, nuts, and bread. The flavor is like a slightly watered down version of the same. Light-medium bodied, with medium-high carbonation and a watery mouthfeel that should be more toasty.

Can:   Dark brown, almost black, thin frothy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Soft roasted malt nose, slightly bready in a whole wheat way.   On the tongue its pretty pale in its roastiness, hardly could say its even toasty.   Now that I see it uses the Urquell Lager yeast, it tastes like Pilsner Urquell a bit.   As it warms I get a little bit of bakers like chocolate on the nose.   Seems very clean, backside has a very faint pasture/earthy like tinge.   Comes across as a very average Schwarzbier.   Thanks for the can Bill!
