Dark for a double IPA, Missile Dropkick also offers a darker set of ingredients. More dark brown than amber or orange, it’s mostly opaque with an off white, almost cream colored head. Hops aren’t in your face when you take a sniff, rather a burnt caramel genltly welcomes you and lets on a hint of woody, pine needle hops. In the mouth it tastes more like an American Strong Ale. It’s pretty convincing. The beer is hopped like a Double IPA, but has a more agressive malt body that seems a little complex. Heavy crystal malts are solely to blame for the awesome color. No roasted, toasted, coffee or chocolate flavors are present. Yet, despite the color it’s not too sweet. Alcohol creeps up on you, but is at a great balance with both the beer’s overall bitterness and sweetness. Much more impressive once it’s in the mouth, this satisfies both Strong Ale and Double IPA cravings. Seriously, a great hybrid of the two styles. It finishes bitter with oils very obviously embedding themselves in your mouths pores, in a green and floral manner. That malty darkness doesn’t let up in the finish either and makes for a distinctive and almost off-kilter, but awesome, experience

Tap at Flying Saucer, Sugarl Land.
Pours a glassy and thick amber with a nose of tart cherry malt and light strawberry syrup. Flavor is tart strawberry malt, vegetable sugar, and toast. Average mouthfeel. Not bad.

Little too sweet for me, almost cloyingly so. Slightly musty toasted malts on the nose. Bitter with a strong malt backbone. Almost a dark red color. Not their best beer, but interesting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark, clear orange-copper, almost brown with a fluffy off-white head. Extremely dark for an IPA. Aroma of citrus and other fruits, caramel, and pine. Pretty bold. Flavor is sweet and bitter, but not very strongly. Fairly full bodied. Good stuff.

On tap at the Draught House. Drank alongside the Belgian version of this beer, Flying Headbutt. The beer pours a deep red color with a tan head. The aroma is full of pine and orange notes, as well as a ton of sweet malt. The flavor is very similar. I get a lot of sugary, sweet notes from the malts, as well as some toffee, bitter orange and alcohol. This is a big, boozy, sugary Double IPA. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Tap at Flying Saucer in Austin, TX-June 2012-pours deep amber dark copper hue with a lovely eggshell head. nose is very malty with some woody piney hops. Sugary alcohol notes come out of the glass pretty strong. Almost smells like a barleywine to me. Wow, huge flavors here brown sugar, alcohol ,lite fruity notes, big spicy woody hops. this is a huge beer! long alcohol and hops on the finish. If this wasnt so hot, i would have given it a bit higher rating. very well made, however, not my type of IIPA.

Half pint glass at Draught House- served a darkened amber and marron, virtually no head. Aroma of yeast and malt. Hits the mouth with a medium body, a fruit sensation comes in from the start and hangs around until the finish which is unwanted the whole time, some hops in the middle but not as many as you may think, finish is mildy acidic- like a weak IPA. Shame this one was my Texas number 200, but at least it wasn’t made out of Denton county, or else there would be problems considering the name- JOB Squad all the way with this one, and that’s a shoot!

Draught. Big hop nose. Grapefruit, pineapple, cherries, lemon, papaya, mango. Caramel malt in the background. Somewhere between ruby and mahogany with a thin patchy head and nice lacing. Huge hop flavor with restrained but present bitterness. Sweet with a lot of fruit. Medium bodied with a very dry finish and slight lingering astringency. A beautiful hop bomb.

On tap at Draught House. Pours a cloudy amber with a small off white head. The aroma is floral hop and grapefruit. Medium mouthfeel with a bitter hop and grapefruit flavor with lingering bitter finish. Alcohol present but not overpowering. A good IIPA from Austin Beerworks.
