3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
P: Copper amber body with floating specks and timid bubbles. Head creates a offwhite layer of thin bubbles that settle to a silky film.
S: Hefty dose of spice with rye bread, tannin, barley, oxidation has set in, very timid funky yeast that is more powdery than funky. Orange, lemon and tart pear sprinkled with crushed pepper corns. Clove, old leather, booze and faint banana arrive once warmed. Musty and earthy like crawling around in the attic.
T/M: Orange oil, rose petals, soapy citrus, grapefruit, caramel malt, tons if rye, barley, cardamom, hibiscus leaves, jasmine, fruit wax and aggressive spices. Floral hops and bitter fruit round out the super dry and chaulky finish. Medium-full creamy body with spicy carbonation. Hop bitterness is unpleasant and distracts from the blend.
O: So I have to say that I was excited for this beer. This didnít age well at all. Stale spicy rye is the forefront on this beer. It really shows more like a rye IPA than a saison. Super aggressive flavor profile that is really rough and messy. Not a triumphant success of the style but still glad I was able to try this. If fresh this would have blown me away and would have done better in my eyes.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
"Strong aroma has a fruity and yeasty overtone, rather like a good hefeweizen. It pours a clear, dark brownish amber with a typical pale golden-tan head. Malty flavor has firm fruity and hoppy notes, with just a little bitterness and a hint of caramel. Smooth, edgy texture has good body and leaves a woody, slightly sweet finish."

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer pours decently with a light brown/orangish color to it, a mild head and some lacing on the glass. The beer smells great with a good blend of banana, clove, citrus hoppiness, and a rye finish. The taste is decent with a lemon zest, citrus hoppiness and a rye finish...Im still waiting for the Saison portion other than the lemon zest. The mouthfeel is decent with the beer being carbonated okay, medium bodied, and a decent dryness. Overall, a decent blend of flavores but a total miss with the Saison portion of it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Medium ambery brown pour like applice cider, intensely cloudy with eighth inch of eggshell head that disappeared within a minute. Powdery sour aroma, white grape juice and saison, a bit of alcohol too. Low carbonation, mouthfeel average to buttery, finish a bit peppery with a slight bit of alcohol heat that numbs the tongue. Rye-y taste, a decent amount of ground black pepper, subtle but some melon and booze flavor. Nice saison with a favorable amount of rye/pepper flavor, would be better if there was more sour fruit taste though.

2011 Vintage / Bottled in May 2011
7/28/2011: Avery Eighteen (A Dry-Hopped Rye Saison)... Aroma: Flat, just the slightest hint of anise. Appearance: Pale copper color, shiny; average carbonation; thin, crackle-top beige veil. Flavor: Wow, quite unexpected... Starts with a deep, subtle, somewhat meaty smokiness that rises slowly to the surface; light citrus quality in the middle followed a bit of oily, toasted rye malt; thereís a hit of sweetness right at the end and then some dry fruitiness that I would expect from the rye malt. Palate: Medium-bodied; smooth and a bit slick; mild carbonation. Overall: Hmmm... Not really sure what this is as it is definitely NOT what I expected at all. That having been said, itís good and perfectly drinkable, but definitely nothing noteworthy.
1 Pint 6 fl. oz. bottle (O.G. 1.069; 8.12% ALC/VOL). Rating #262 for this beer.
