UPDATED: OCT 15, 2007 Bottle from Friar Tuck in Savoy, IL. Pours a beautiful dark brown/black with a thick brown head- very stout like. Aroma of caramelized sugar, raisen, hops, and tobacco. Full bodied with a slight stickiness to the rich malty texture. Initial flavor of molasses, cocoa, and raisen that immediately gets zapped by a citrusy hop middle. Bitter finish is peppery yet moderately sweet. I am not totally sold on black IPA’s yet, but I enjoyed this much better when it warmed. I think this is better than Stone 11th, at least right now.

Poured a deep brown with a big beige head. Aroma is ripe fruit, belgian yeast, and sweet malt. Flavor is raisin, toffee, clove and bananas. Very complex. Glad I have a couple more of these to see how they age.

Pours a blackish rootbeer color w/ a full, semi creamy froth. Hangtime is forever finally receding to a thick, latherous lacey blanket. Aromas of sweet malted hopped up charcoal. Full nectar w/ a delayed effer reaction. It sets on your palate flat then fumes forward a creamy textured nectar. This brew is very strongly flavored w/ a serious roast component. Theres a defined spicey Belgian character that emerges while the brew goes down. Fat chewy malts give way to charcoal roasted hop blades. Moderately sweet w/ flavors of beef jerkey, flora spice, iodine, molases, angostura bitters, medicine, tar, citrus rind, black cherry, dried plums. The citrus rind doesn’t blend well w/ the medicinal unit. It throws the flavors off a bit. Maybe some time in storage will mellow it out a bit. After a time the hopsy character will give way like the Berlin wall and the malt will shine through. It’s like the brew is held captive by hopsy blades of steel. The finish is long w/ a sharp bittering that cuts through the fat. Overall: this brew is very rich needing time to develope.

Bottle from cbkschubert; Nose an unusual combo of light piney hops and dark fruits with toffee; clear cherry brown with a big beige head that laces nicely; falvor of caramel, coffee, toffee, pepperiness, and some hop bitterness, which combines with some fruitiness fro the finish! i think the Stone 11th tried to follow this one!

From bottle@Københavnske Øldage 2009. Low, dense beige cream head. Opaque, dark brown body. Aroma is sweetish malty and hoppy. Some acidulous fruits, spices and roastedness. Sweet-flavored, rich roasted malty and distinct fruity, earthy and resinous hop bitter. Near full-bodied. Hoppy bitterness goes on in a long finish. Very good stuff, powerful and nicely balanced.

Aroma was really nice. Rich malty chocolate and a some belgian spiciness to this. This beer really seemed like an abbey dubbel rather than an ASA. Flavor was actually very tastey but it was just a little to sweet for me. A slight hoppiness and bitterness to this. Kind of a hopped up dubbel which was pretty interesting and i actually enjoyed this a lot.

Pours a dark copper color with a light tan head. Aroma is of molasses, citrus hops, caramel, dark fruits, and some alcohol. Very complex aroma. Starts of with sweet malts, molasses, citrus hops and some toasted malts. MIddle flavor is of dark fruits and nuts. Finishes with floral hops and alcohol to give it a delicious ending. I really enjoyed this brew.
