4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Angeloregon (2054) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 11, 2007
UPDATED: OCT 9, 2007 Distinctly unique dark and hoppy beer. Abysmal chocolate black body with a nice two-finger beige-white head. Quite mellow for its ABV and appearance. Deep red and mahogany tones appeared. Liquorish and molasses in the front with a great sweet dry-hop finish. Belgian yeast and floral NW hops make this beer a dubbel IPA to say the very least.

Bottle. Dark brown, almost black with a enormous light brown head. Aroma is piney, honey, heather, coffee, fruity and caramel. Nice body, warming alcohol, rather sweet at first but then turns bitter. Hoppy flavour, quite oily, notes of dark fruits, pines, mocha, oranges and wood. A very interresting brew, I think of it as a DIPA with a touch of roasted barley. I hope they make it regular!

bottle. near black pour with huge frothy head that lasts throughout. nice lacing. powerful aroma. spice, yeast, dry hops prominant, dark fruits, candy, some sugar, oak. very rich and complex aroma. Hopped out. At first I thought it threw off the balance a bit but at the end I don’t know. Very rich malts, mild chocolates and dry fruits. some spice and oak. A little dank. A nice alcohol warming. Unlike anything else. You find yourself analyzing every sip. A definite treat.

bomber. pours a dark brown with a nice thick tan fluffy head.... which stays throughout as a thin tan head. aromas of molasses, candi sugar and dark fruits. huge malt character on the palate, with flavors of currants, molasses and sweet sugar. very soft and carbonated on the top, while very bitter on the back and sides. the dry hopping comes through on the finish quite well. this one sticks with you, but in a very different way than the usual hopped up IIPA. very flavorful and unique. quite excellent - I’ll buy another one before they are gone for good.

22 oz bottle. Pours a very dark ruby with 2 to 3 cm foamy brown rolling head, looks almost stout like on head profile. Aroma is balanced between sweet malt, molasses and hops. Initial flavor is also balanced in a similar fashion. The end flavor and aftertaste are dominated by hops and alcohol and is lasting. Good lacing, light carbonation, medium to full body, and alcohol noted. Drinkability is high, really enjoyed this one.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Barrios (1243) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - MAY 3, 2009
Bottle at Butters Big Cellar Blowout! Thanks Butters for letting me choose what I wanted for this 400th rating. Pours a lacing, tan head with a dark brown body. Smells of molasses, dark bread, citrus, spice hops, ginger, and alcohol. Flavors the same but with some vanilla notes. The alcohol, hops, and sweetness are balanced very well.

Half pint serving on draft @ Dunedin brewery for $5 on June 23, 2007. Nice clear yet slightly opaque amber color that has dark copper hues around the edges and 1/4” tight tan head. The aroma is both sugary sweet and roasty with prunes and raisins that have been stored for a short time in an oak box. The first sip ushers in a relatively viscous fluid creating an initial sense of this beer’s gravity. Also in the first sip I notice this is rather complex with flavor notes all over. The taste has a moment of sweetness initially that gets run-over by molasses covered oak planks. The flavor becomes tougher to discern after that. I get raisins, prunes, chocolate, a bit of malt dust, then more sweet dark fruitiness and molasses. There is a maple syrup, dark chocolate, slightly astringent toffee (if that makes sense), hints of alcohol, and dark fruit that carry right into the after taste. After the beer warmed some I seem to notice both a maple and beacon aroma hidden just beneath the other notes. Well, I think that’s beacon I’m smell.

This is one huge, delicious beer. Huge nose, huge flavor. Huge. Every single drop of this beer screamed at me. What was it screaming you might ask? GET MORE. Unfortunately, this is it. My one and only bottle. Damn.
The beer pours out this intriguing brownish/eggplant purpleish color witha huge off-white 3 finger thick head. My first impressions on the aroma was cchocolate covered raisins with an intriguing woody hop aroma. Lots of plums, some vanilla and molasses too. The first time it hits your tongue it’s like getting whacked on the head and you are sort of dazed a bit. Not sure what the hell’s going on. There’s some figs/plums, molasses, dark chocolate, smoke, vanilla with interesting underlying spicyness that damned near perfect. Reminded me in some ways of Firestone’s 10. Lots of sstuff going on here and it’s all good.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 NYHarvey (2153) - New York, New York, USA - JUN 29, 2007
UPDATED: JUL 3, 2007 The aroma holds chocolate, bubblegum, candy sugar, molasses and lots of other vaguely toasty and sweet things I can’t pin down. The body is brown to black and holds a two finger thick, lasting, tan head that is craggy and fluffy atop. Burnt brown sugar and molasses in the fore gives it a bitter and sweet note. The middle is huge with sweet molasses and chocolate. Massive malts and lightly hot alcohol notes. Hints of licorice and brown sugar in the finish. Very nice beer!
