The hallmark of Belgian Triples are fruity esters balanced with a dry finish that fall in the range of 7-9% ABV. And for this year’s 19th anniversary celebratory brew, we decided to create a stylistically perfect beer—something unusual considering our penchant for producing eccentric beers that defy styles or categories.

In excited anticipation of 20 years and the new brewery, we concocted this very traditional, yeast driven, dry and fruity Tripel.

Hop Variety: Bravo, Czech Saaz
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, Wheat, Oats
Yeast Variety: Achouffe

Silphium (3190) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - JUN 30, 2012
Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Hazy apricot body, thick puffy cream head. Estery nose with wet grass, clove, white grape, hints of bubblegum, and pear syrup. Nicely balanced. Dry, estery body with yeast bitterness, light fruits, clove, and hints of bubblegum. Floral with warming alcohol; vinous. Nice complexity and a pleasure to sip.

750ml bottle poured into glass. Brownish yellow color with a slightly hazy center. Aroma has hints of citrus and yeasty qualities. Flavor is a little on the bitter side but still has some fruity qualities like lemon and orange. Not too bad.

Bottle. Pours cloudy yellow with white, fizzy, soapy head. Aroma is yeasty with notes of tropical fruit, banana, some farmhouse. Flavor is medicinal (could be clove) fruity, banana, yeasty bread, light tartness, malty, some sweetness, a bit cloying with some alcohol spiciness. Mouthfeel is soft and medium-heavy with high fizzy carbonation. Overall, seems to be a bit of a mess, while it tasted ok, I just do not crave another one any time soon.

Bottle. Clear bright yellow with a fizzy white head. Crisp bready citrus aroma with strong overtones of skunky hops. Bready citrus, light sugar, grass, skunky hops, and hay flavors with a sweet finish.

Pours hazy gold into a tulip. Bright white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Tropical fruit and yeast aromas. Soft with sweet bubblegum and banana front to back. Lasting hot yeast and mild bitter clove finish.

Pours a pale golden color with a white head. Smells fairly sweet with lots of bready malt and table sugar. A moderate fruitiness to it, mostly pears and apples with a touch of banana. Good yeastiness to it. The flavor is sweet with lots of fruit character. A touch of citrus, some banana, pear, and apple to go with a sweet bread and sugar malt base. Mild yeast and a very light spice note.

Pours a hazy pale golden color with a moderate white head. The aroma delivers on yeast qualities with similarities to banana and lemon but delivered in a funkier way, like mushrooms or sourdough bread. There’s also hay, grass, champagne and a gentle creamy sweetness. Flavor follows suit with a grassy and slightly doughy, bread crust malt entry followed by some of the fruit and dry, mushroomy yeast funk. Every now and then, I taste citrus. Finishes pretty dry with yeast flavors and earthy, grassy hops and a moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy and the carbonation is medium-high; there’s a creaminess to it, but you can tell it’s not a tripel from Belgium. Good beer, about as traditional I think as Avery is capable of, and the flavor comes very close, but the texture can still be tweaked.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is classic tripel, with some nice citrus and wheat notes. There is also some sweetness from the candy sugar and some spice from the Belgian yeast. The flavor is very similar, with a lot of orange and lemon notes, as well as a lot of pepper and yeast. The beer is fairly dry and the alcohol is well hidden. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice American-made tripel and another good anniversary beer from Avery.
