3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3143) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - AUG 4, 2011
Sampled on tap at 1702, Tucson; May 2011
brown tinged, 1-finger, dark tan head, awesome staying power, very tight and creamy lots of layered lacing. deep brown, burnt amber, not quite black color, lightly hazed, rich concentrated amber-brown in light. dark roast malt touches with pine and citrus hops. chocolate notes, clean dark malt, at times rivals hops. quite fruity smelling, berry and citrus.
first sip is creamy, citrusy, light burn caramel richness, spicy alcohol and bitter hops. med body, chewy and sweet, somewhat sipper. rich chocolate body, big maltiness, burnt prune even. bitterness in finish from touches of burnt malt, but mostly from clean hop bite. hoppy at first, but malt plays more and more as work my way through, always hop dominated, but smooth somehow.
good, even tasty, though not knock your socks off.

Pours a beautiful very dark brown color with a nice creamy head. Head is khaki with a reddish hue. Smell has a very unique berry flavor to it when I first smelled it, but couldn’t detect it any longer. Good amount of chocolate, roasty goodness, with a very pleasant hop aroma. On the tounge get a good amount of roasted notes, chocolate, cream, and a bang of hop flavor. I’d say this was close to a old ale. Very clean flavor to it... must be the water. Finishes mildly bitter and roasty. How the f*#$% do they make beer this good? Enjoyability 5/5.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 boto (1581) - Granby, Connecticut, USA - JUN 28, 2011
22oz. bottle: This one pours an opaque, dark brown color. There was quite a bit of a tall, tan head that lingers awhile and leaves some lacing. There is a nice nose to the beer. It is an interesting mix of chocolate and pine hops. Possible some caramel and spices also. The taste is good. More of a cocoa taste than chocolate. Some roastiness, hints of caramel and a touch of bitterness. This is a nice beer!
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 markwise (2912) - North of Tampa, Florida, USA - JUN 20, 2011
On draft at Hoptomic 2011. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Nose is chocolate malt, some grassy hops, black licorice, some earth, tar, a bit of spice, and some yeast. Flavor is similar to the aroma. This one was a lot better than the description let on.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 ChainGangGuy (3835) - Canton, Georgia, USA - JUN 15, 2011
22 ounce bottle - $7.99 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours out a very dark brown body with a very tall, fairly long-lasting, tan head. Smattering of lace on the descent.
Smell: A tar-scented note of blackened malts ahead of chocolate melted into low-grade, overheated coffee. Then, some vague roasted nuttiness, as well as the citrus, additional dark fruitiness, and the promised resinous grassiness, though assumably diminished by nearly a year’s time.
Taste: Roasty, toasty - going between charry, chilled coffee and scorched bread slices. Bittersweet chocolate shavings and cracked, roasted nuts fall in between the acridness. A hint of stale Whoppers, licorice powder, and cigarette smoke. Some prunes, but as the bitterness gains a cumulative effect on the tongue, it becomes a bit eclipsed. Lightly resinous, earthy hops with some firmly spicy, herbal notes and some citrus, too. Moderately bitter at this point, though, I’ll admit, I am a bit late getting around to this one. Oops. I promise, Avery, I’ll be Johnny-on-the-spot when it comes to Eighteen! Roasty with moderate bitterness remaining, and warming on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.
Overall: It’s hoppy, it’s a big dark lager. While fun for a little anniversary release frivolity, it’s not something I’d regularly turn to.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 nuplastikk (2608) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 30, 2011
Opaque brown-black. Thin, steady, rusty beige head. Brown sugar, maybe some pungent dark fruit. Quite unique, really maintains it’s Schwarziness even with the big ABV. World Class, approaching smoky. Smooth and very drinkable. Chalky chocolate tones. Awesome.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 theisti (2441) - Leawood, Kansas, USA - MAY 24, 2011
22 oz bottle purchased at Lukas in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is an opaque block brown, with a nicely formed one inch khaki head. The aroma is dark cocoa nibs, mild roast and small light char. Also present is a pleasant, mild vegetable element in the back. Pretty subdued nose, but nicely so. The taste is initially a bright sweet cocoa earthy pine thing that is a bit hard to describe, moving quickly to the roast malt, and finishing dry and chalky with a mineral taste. The finish is really crisp. As the beer warms, the green vegetable of the hops comes out more. The palate is medium bodied, starts off by coating the mouth a bit, then dries out with the roast. The carbonation level is also pretty high, helping it to further dry out. Interesting mouth feel. I would have expected to pick up on the alcohol a bit, but its well integrated. Nice one.
