3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 rarbring (653) - Linköping, SWEDEN - OCT 1, 2012
Aroma: The smell is mostly herbal, grass, pine, but a bit dusty. Appearance: This beer is dark, very dark, brown, clear and with a high, slowly settling, head. Lots of lacing! Taste: Tasting first sweet, dark brown bread, some dried fruits, herbal notes of grass, pine, some anisette. Palate: Medium to low carbonation, smooth and thick, a dry finish. Overall: A very different lager indeed. Not bad at all, but could have been a stout. Note: Bottle. Reviewed 2010-10-08.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 PhillyCraft (1963) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 5, 2012
Not usually my style but the ratings were solid so I decided to grab a bottle from total wine in Cherry Hill. Pours a deep ruby brown color with medium head and a very sticky lacing. Aromas and taste of barley malt, chocolate, rye bread, lemons, asian soy, and oats. A little boozey but nothing too crazy. Good

Cellared, May 2010 bomber poured to snifters with a black/brown hue and just a slight edge of ruby highlighting, a light tan, bubbles & cream head, and spots & streaks of lacing clinging to the glass. The nose was crusts, roastiness, chocolate, caramel, a touch of dark fruit sweetness, treacle, and showed it’s age with the slightest hint of soy. Only medium bodied with decent malt, low hop bitterness, and light warmth, the flavor was smooth, but less expressive in presenting the former notes. The finale exhibited a pleasant dryness. Thanks Brad for sharing!

18th August 2010 Opaque black beer. Good light brown head. The head is creamy with a little smoky malt. Soft palate - light and fluffy. Creamy dark malt. Whisper of roast. A little lactose sweetness. Soft finish has a little hop bitterness. Comes over as a sumptuous porter. Nice.

A friend of mine split this with me and to be honest, I was disappointed. It was just unremarkable and I have usually found Avery anniversary beers interesting. Dark black color obviously with a malty smell. The taste was like a dark lager but was just kind of boring. The beer was not hard to drink but for an $8 anniversary beer I would expect a little more.

Pitch black pout with beige head. Roasty chocolate aroma along with some grassy hops. Slight bitter chocolate taste at the start then turns roasty. Nice dry finish where the hop taste lingers on your tongue. Really nice black lager. More mouthfeel than expected.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled May 2010. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense dark khaki head with great retention that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, chocolate, light coffee, earthy hops, and a touch of dark fruits. Very nice aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, nuttiness, coffee, dark fruit, earthy hops, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and herbal hops on the finish for a good bit. Very nice and lush malt balance with the hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed at all on the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent black lager from Avery. Great flavor balance and complexity; and very smooth to drink for the alcohol level.
