COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

Pours thick and dense and only releases it head once reaching the top of the glass. This will quickly dissipate to leave you staring into the woody brown depth of this glorius libation. Color is of dark stained oak or molasses. The nose exhibits a decidedly round toasted malt profile with hints of vanilla, fresh cut mahogany, dried date and raisin. The mouth feel is lightly effervesent and soft without becoming syrupy as a sizable dose of wheat malt takes over for the highly tactile finish. The flavor shows big brown roasted grain, pecan pie, light wood smoke, fig and date with slightly sweet hint of english toffee.

Pours deep red/brown, medium to thick on the texture, thin head (almost no carbonation), coffee candy flavor, sweet finish, sours on the long finish. The one I drank was very mature and aged quickly in the glass.

I know it has been retired, picked up a bottle in Seattle. Pours a deep reddish-brown color, nice head. Smells of raisen and toffee, first taste very smooth a lot of malt. A bit too sweet for me but ... it went down very easy for a 9.5% beer.

Picked up a bomber at Kahn’s Liquors in an Avery sale in May 2008. Got almost no head on the pour. Plenty of aroma still there, with fruit and bread both coming through. Fairly creamy mouth feel. The alcohol comes through in the aftertaste and that becomes more pronounced as the beer warms. It seemed to hit peak flavor around 45-50 degrees F, not a suprise given the ABV. I could only drink half the bomber.

Wow a big weizen doppelbock, dark mahogany color, lace. Aroma of coffe, pepper, and bitter choc. med to full body with flavors of dark fruits, banana with chocolate, licorice, and stong alcohol. Avery always suprises me.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2007 The head is big and beige. Dark brown, almost black with a little deep reddish brown. Something off and tinny in the aroma. Coffee and tanned leather aroma. Caramel and burnt coffee flavor. Some fruit in the taste...maybe apricot. Goes down warm. The sweetness seems to come from unfermented sugars, and not in a good way. Medium/heavy bodied beer. That tinny smell catches my nose with every drink, very distracting.

I expected a lot more from this beer. I have been impressed by Avery’s other releases, but this failed to meet my expectations. Appearance - I was really excited by the appearance of this beer. The dark reddish brown color was very attractive, and there was a little bit of frothy head as I poured. The head did not lace the glass, however. Aroma - Malt odors prevail, while fruit and alcohol seem to be there. Taste - The wheat and fruit give this beer a sweet taste with a slight bitterness. It was hard to place the taste. As the bottle says, its a Weizen Doppelbock. There are thI guess the weizen countrered thoe sweet tones of a weizen, but the malty tones of the doppelbock. It was very drinkable, but I doubt I’d buy another one for myself. Mouthfeel - This beer was very thin and dry. For such a high alcohol content and being a doppelbock, I expected a thicker feel. Drinkability - This beer should be shared. 750 mL of a high ABV beer is a lot for one person. After 500 mL, the beer begins to sit heavy. I doubt that I would have another one for myself. All in all, this is a pretty good beer. I was expecting more, since I am a huge fan of Bell’s Consecrator Doppelbock. However, the weizen tones made for an interesting experience. This one is worth a try. If nothing else, it’s an excellent way to start your evening.
