COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

Bananas, wheat and roasted malt in the nose. Considerable alcohol presence detected. Some molasses as well. Mostly clear very dark red; almost opaque. Quite sweet, with a high alcohol profile. This is a very good beer. Underrated if you ask me. Small, tan head. I was looking for my weissbier glass and couldn’t find it. I guess that means I need more than one. So, I am using a cross between a flute and a footed pilsner glass; Carlsberg logo. I could swear this beer has a hop profile. The alcohol is a little overbearing; that would be my one knock on this brew. If it were maybe 3/4% lower in ABV, it would be perfect. Another winner from Avery.

I rather liked this one. Very pretty deep ruby with nice, compact and lasting tan head. Aroma a pleasant mix of caramel, molasses, bread, and clove spices. Flavor matched, a great balance between full, sweet malts and gentle esters. Perhaps not "typical," but since I don’t care for the typical bock beers, this would be a good thing. Really liked this actually.

Avery Thirteen came out deep reddish brown in color, and the tall three finger thick head was nearly perfect for a Weizenbock. The aroma was bursting with dark malts. The smell of dark fruits tropical soaked in rum was more reminiscent of a Barleywine than a bock, because of the penchant Avery has for putting in an ample amount of hops without deference to the claimed style. The taste was also bursting with banana, dark fruit, and clove flavors that are typical of a Weizenbock, and a spicy hoppyness that is not. At the end of the session, this beer started morphing into somewhat of a Double Stout, with a roasty dry character coming out. The alcohol was also definitely up there, with warm numbing sensation beginning to permeate throughout the body. Silky smooth and soft on the palette, the beer became creamier as it warmed. I was very impressed with this year’s offering from Avery. It was a ton better than the awful lavender Saison from last year.

Bottle. Pours a slick black color with a light tan head. Chocolate and raisin aromas with an almost citrusy note. Thick mouth feel with a good bit of carbonation. Dry and fruity with a substantial sweetness somewhere mid-palate. Caramel, chocolate, dark fruits and even some slight banana notes. Finishes dry. Slightly hot.

"If it’s got a goat, it’s gotta be good."

Well-bedecked bottle pours a deep ruby/mahogany with a short, tan head that settles quickly into a thin film and halo. Aroma finds a luscious blend of malts and yeasts sharpened with a whipcrack of alcohol. Caramel, apple, banana, whisky, maple, sweet cherries, Juicy Fruit gum.... damn, there’s alot going on! A smooth, wheaty palate is fluffed up by a healthy hit of carbonation as a precursor to carressing the throat as a warm, silky syrup (all the while leaving a dry astringence in the mouth!) Yeasts dominate the flavor with Weisse-like fruitiness. Sweetness from the malts is tempered by soft hop-bitterness and alcohol (again) which now seems a little too forward. Sadly, the linger hangs with a sour fruitiness and a hint of pungency, rather like a children’s chewable vitamin. Despite its few downfalls, this was six dollars well-spent and I’ll be heading back out to Frankfort because this goat should age quite nicely.

On tap at Papago Brewing. Pours a dark red-brown with a dense, slowly-dissipating head. Aroma is sweet, with notes of caramel and raisins. Lots of malt flavor, with some caramel, coffee, chocolate, raisins... almost porter-like but sweeter. Very light, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Astoundingly easy to drink for the amount of alcohol in it. A winner.

Pours a very dark amber with a medium light tan head. Nice carbonation and decent lacing. Aroma is wonderful. Sweet rich candied malts, light spices, and a tad rummy. Flavor is heavy cake malts, spices, and yeasts. A full rich mouthfeel with a spicy bitterness in the finish.
