Consumed: Nov. 28, 2013
Misc.: Bottled June 4, 2013; 17.09% ABV
A big thanks to Nick for the kind gift.
Poured an almost pitch black cloud color with 2-to-3 fingers of tan head that dissipated almost immediately. Minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention all the way down.
Smelled a mix of a lot of different flavors. Got coconut, crayon, toast, wood, vanilla, rum, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee (a bit like Roloís candy), Cherry Coke and some more rum.
Tasted much better than the smell. Got chocolate, dark chocolate, wood, smooth rum, dry coconut, crayon, almost burnt toast, Roloís candy, caramel and toffee.
Medium body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish. Tastes strong, but not 17.09 percent strong.
After starting off fairly weak, this beer really came on. I enjoyed it very much. Would love to get my hands on it again.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle courtesy of Mark. Thanks, dude. Much appreciated. Pours a rich deep blackish brown hue, well hazed darker body with caramel brown glow, cocoa and gentle deep reddish glow. Darker, blackish brown body is thicker, some legs on the swirl, touches of reddish brown glow on the edges. A more loose tannish head stays as a frothy small layer, sits atop as a mellow film, thicker ring sticks around and laces ok. Aromas are potent, showing bbiscuits and toast, toffee and cocoa.Shaved and toasty coconut meet warmth, oak, some vanillin and brown sugar. Spirity warmth, Cocoa, sticky toffee and chocolate chip cookies, a bit thicker and full, sweet. Some roastiness, warm barrel and Rum elements, firmer coconut as it warms a bit moroe. Initial is fuller bodied, sticky sugary caramel meets a good deal of dark fruit, milk chocolate, cocoa, and toffee. Rum, brown sugar. More vanilla extract, oak, and warmth starts to hit. Firmer ooconut, cooked and shaved, gentle toastiness as we hit the body. That weird dark fruit sticky sweetness that comes with stout/porters that get too big for my personal tastes. A bit sticky, toffee and vanilla, more coconut as we turn that corner. The nose really settles into a more enjoyable coconut flourish feel. Sticky fuller body is a bit syrupy up front. But tapers and thins a bit from the barrel into the backend. This backend shows the coconut at itís firmest, oak and gentle spirit, chocolate chip cookies. Finish is a bit thinned, a bit warm, the Rum isnít overpowering and certainly this rich, huge body does stand up to a spirit barrel that usually easily overwhelms. A bit toastu, lingering coconut and vanillla, sweeter elements. Again, it gets better into the baackend and finish but itís still a beast. That front end and middle are a but syrupy. Nose is really nice at times, a bit cloying at others. An interesting beer, hard to drink more than one and honestly I couldnít even get past half of the bottle. Share this. While itís a bit too much by yourself, itís certainly worthy of a try and is an impressive experiment worthy of a solid score.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks to adnielsen ! Pours a rich thick viscous burnt umber color with a finger or so of eggshell foam. The nose is sweet milk chocolate, deep dark fruit, coconut, rum booze... the palate follows and there are moments when my eyes roll into the back of my head and Im wrapped up in a beautifully balanced cacophony of needhamís candy, rum booze and milk chocolate syrup. There are other moments where I feel like Im just way too stereotypically American and like this beer because its sweet, but then I look at the abv and say shit... Im getting wasted ! Yummy beer that I would drink again anytime as long as its for dessert.

Bottle from Ratman. Pours nearly opaque black with a small, fizzy tan head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is chocolate, roast, and coffee malt, coconut, dates, figs, earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is malt dominant, moderately sweet, coconut, spicy alcohol, dark fruits, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body and light carbonation.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Scott - thanks! Murky dark molasses brown pour with a thin scattering of tan foam. Aroma is overwhelmingly sweet with brown sugar, molasses, dense and sweet malt, some lingering alcohol vapors, and some rum. If thereís coconut, I cannot find it. Taste is as expected with dense, sugary sweet malt and raisin with sugared molasses and booze. Coating mouthfeel. Over the top sweet.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours dark daark brown with a little cream head that quickly disappears and some coconut floating on top. Aroma is nice but off point for what it is; nice barrel influence and rum, some vanilla, some roastiness, but not quite getting too much coconut. There is definitely some heat to this, as I would expect from past Avery offerings and just the fact that its 17%. Flavor is super sweet; lots of coconut and vanilla, tons of sugar, rum and its barrel, some chocolate. Mouthfeel is thick and straight up viscous, which I usually like but found was a detractor for this beer to a degee. Overall, definitely sweet as hell but kinda enjoyable in moderation. I split this bottle with a friend, would have even been better off having split it between 2 others. Would not drink this again.

12 oz. bottle shared with my man Cary. Pours a cola brown color with small ring around the glass. Aroma of coconut, rum, chocolate candy bar, lots of cocoa and booze. Intoxicating aroma. Flavor is sweet, alcohol sweet, slight alcoholic burn, medium barrel notes. Slick, oily body, full mouthfeel, average carbonation. Finishes big and sweet. Interesting.
