03-JUN-2012, bottle @Papsø tasting. Hazy orange with low than head. Sour nose, red wine like. Flemmish red type. Not all that brett’y. More vinous and woody. Very fine drink.

Thanks to someone for sharing this at a tasting at the Addison Flying Saucer in August 2011. The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the sour cherries with a good dose of brown sugar thrown in. The flavor is similar. There is a ton of sour cherry, as well as quite a bit of vinegar, some oak and some brown sugar. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice.

Bottled. A red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of brettanomyces, caramel, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, brettanomyces, alcohol, caramel, and pepper, leading to a dry finish.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours a cloudy opaque amber with a small off-white head. Tart, farty aroma. Medium body, heavy wood, caramel, sour cherries - very sour - lots of lactic and acetic acids. Dry and tart finish. Interesting. 030612

Bottle shared by Ari. Pours a murky ruby amber with no head whatsoever. Aroma has a lot of sour fruit with a good amount of acid and a backing dry wine note. Flavor has a good amount of acid and sour red fruit with a dry red wine finish.

Bottle via a trade with ratman! Pours with a hazed but still vibrant red hued body with a tan ring of foam that fades. Aromas are huge with a lacto/yogurt character, sweet cherries, red wine, and a mild bretty funk. Flavors are tart with some acetic notes. Strong cherry acid (malic) as well. Tons of tannin, cherry, mild wine notes, alcohol, yogurt, vanilla. Doesn’t feel especially vibrant (maybe the abv?). Still, bracing and puckering acidity, medium alcohol on the palate. Lively bubbles and dry with an acetic finish.

From notes. First reviewed 8/19/2011. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for sharing this bottle. Meretrix has a light, mostly transparent brown color with an orange cherry tint. A small tan head forms on pouring and fades to nothing over time. In the nose there is lots of sour cherry, tart and pleasant, with a robust cabernet and some oak behind it. Not very subtle. Tart cherries and vinegar up front combine with the cabernet, which lays slightly in the background, along with a little bit of oak. The finish is tart and acidic. This is definitely tart, fairly acidic, and somewhat vinegary. Light to medium carbonation and a light body leaves the emphasis on the sour cherry and cabernet notes. Overall I found this to be one of better barrel aged beers I have had from Avery.

One of the more sour of this series. Reddish colour, disappearing head. Above average mouthfeel, a sipper and good drinkability with a full meal. Very good creation, and worth seeking out for sour fans. Wine fumes.

Huge thanks to daknole for catching me up on the series. Bottle pours copper with a khaki head. Aroma is tart and oaky with notes of berry and red wine vinegar. Flavor shows definite cherry, light funk, and some vinous character that I can only imagine came from the barrels. Overall body is moderate and the finish is dry. Even though the brew is moderate to heavy acidic, it definately has more juicy fruit sourness than the abrasive, enamel stripping acidity others might associate with the style. Bravo!
