Tap at Avery. Pours clear mahogany with a medium, fizzy light tan head, lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is caramel and cookie malt, smoked meat, fruity esters, and medium floral hops. Flavor is smoked meat and malt, with a medium bitterness and floral hop character. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Paired very well with the brisket and pulled pork.

On tap at Avery Tasting Room poured a clear amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of smoke, carmel and light earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of smoke, carmel and light earthiness with a smooth lingering smokey finish. This beer could stand with the best of the German Rauchbiers!

Tap @ brewery. Pours a clear burnt orange appearance with a creamy cream colored head. Smoky BBQ aroma with an amber malty nose. Body is almost like a Märzen with an amber malty body and a slight nuttiness. Beyond those flavors is an intense burnt BBQ smoky flavor. Smoked flavor is not all that palatable. Burnt smoky finish.

On tap at the Avery brewery. Caesar head, smokey brown that is very sweet and smokey. Mouth puckering, but on thin side. The aroma is smokey.

mostly clear medium caramel orange body. maple syrup and resinous wood smoke in the nose, but heavy sugars (guessing unfermentables) give it a somewhat sickly smoldering plastic/petroleum note. chewy and unnecessarily thick. alcohol seems to mask the smoke character, but it does come across mostly as fatty (like slow-cooked pork skin). did they even try a 4% rauchbier before they made a 9%? ಠ_ಠ

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2010 Sample at the tap room/brewery. This beer is a clear dark amber color with a thin and creamy light beige head that dissipates slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt and hops. Medium body with a moderately smoky character that is has meaty and malty notes. Flavors of hops and touches of fruit as well. The finish is earthy malt with a smoky aftertaste. Decent overall.

Tap @ the brewery. Pours golden, just a little foam, no real head. Aroma of smoke, fresh fruit ( apples ) and some fruity hops. Taste is caramel, floral hops and lots of smoke, peath, alchohol well hidden. Medium body, high and lively carbonation. I liked this beer alot. very smoked. 270211

On tap at Avery. Amber-brown color with a thin, off white/beige head. Hardcore smoky aroma, downright bacony. Smoky enough to fit in at Schlenkerla, this is quite right on. Really stands up to the high alcohol well, the smoke dominates. Some warm spicy alcohol in the finish. Big and mellow at the same time. Well done.

On tap @ Avery Brewery. Pours a transparernt mahogany with some light fizzy head. Smells very smoky but also a little hoppy. Taste overtly like liquid smoke upfront, merging into what I can only describe as fake bacon (the kind of bacon smell from bacon flavored doggy treats). Very roasty and smokey. Kind of surprisingly sweet as well, enough to hide the 9% and make it feel like 5%. Finish was kinda weird though. Not outstanding but at least they tried something vastly different.

Tap at brewery.
Pours a deep, thick cheddar amber with the aroma of a raw slab of bacon. Flavor is subdued rotten peach and smoked ham. Oily mouthfeel. I wanted to love this beer but it was a bit of a letdown.
