black with a small brown head. nose of chalky roast and chocolate malt, light notes of metal and plastic. body is terribly fizzy with nearly all malt structure stripped away - it’s very lightly acidic with a copper metal flavor throughout. terribly weak body, very fizzy. if this is the base for black tot then it really shows how much a barrel can mask the flaws in a mediocre beer. see my ratings for the rye and bourbon barrel versions, which are actually positive.

Draught at Avery. Pours opaque with a medium, dark brown head, lasting with good lacing. Aroma is malty and nutty (peanuts) with milk chocolate, oats, and cardboard. Flavor is dark malt, chocolate, hops, nutty, raisins, oats, prunes, and dates. Full bodied, high carbonation and a dry finish.

On tap at Avery Barrel Room poured a clear dark brown nearly black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and light carmel. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolta, carmel, coffee and vanilla with a smooth lingering chocolate finish.

Not bad plain. Other selections blow it out however. Smoothness isn’t there. Finish is dominated by a bitter coffee flavor. Mainly a roasty impy with no alcohol apparent but barreling this was a great move. Enjoyed it but definitely pales in comparison to the other selections that were available.
